It took less than 12 hours for the republican party and its minions to start quite overtly claiming that the endorsement of Barak Obama by Colin Powell as a simple statement based wholly on race.

I thought before that I had seen it all with such vain attempts to hold on to the power that they so maliciously used but tonight I have seen them turn back the clock. I fear the outcome for our nation I fear they are fanning the flames of a civil war.

I am not a man of religion, I don't go to church but in this case I think only God can forgive them for they know not what they are opening.

I also was watching Chris Matthews tonight and Buchanan said the same thing that Powell endorsed Obama because he is black.

Well gee we couldn't possibly suggest it's because Powell utterly despises the entirety of the current Republican leadership for making him the fall guy for their known lies? People, might, you know, ASK QUESTIONS.

- I don't understand why it's even a bad thing? Obviously there is still a racial bar to success in US society. People like Powell, Rice, and Obama are few and far between. It is much akin to the very, very few senior female figures in the 80s coming out in support for Thatcher. The first black President would be a unique thing, it should certainly be seen as a positive and progressive move by other black politicians, indeed something to celebrate and support.

How can that be a bad thing?

Now, if there had been 5 other black Presidents...

What makes it a bad thing in this case is that these guys, the Limbaughs, Buchanans etc..., use race as a way to belittle the choice when Powell clearly stated that if race had been the driving force he would have done it long ago.

I'm no fool and I think that many people will say that race plays a part in their decision either as a point of voting for and against Obama but the way that it is presented, to belittle the endorsement, is that it is based mostly on race which quite overtly calls into question the judgement of Colin Powell.

Rush Limbaugh has painted himself as a true racist.

I got a chuckle out of Chris Mathews spin that Rush's choice to back McCain was all about race.

As dumb as it was, I don't think McCain intended it to sound racist. Just a stupid thing to say. Just like saying he was going to whip Obama's you know what. Seriously - white people shouldn't use the word whip in connection with black people. Or any people, really. But in the end, just a stupid gaff.
