Flash to quick Executive orders, as is typical during a regime change, and some quick hitters we knew Obama would want to execute.
I do agree with in spirit most of the initiatives tho I really don't think the govt belongs in any legislation involving abortion, stem cell research or such ( including marriage etc etc).

As long as Marriage is a Legal and Federal institution the government will always be involved. If all of the financial incentives were removed, or all legal rights were expanded to any couple (same sex, heterosexual, or even elderly "life partners" who just don't care to marry) then it'd be a different story. As long as there are laws about who gets to visit who on their death bed, execute their will, tax incentives, etc. the government is always going to be necessary in this arena.
Stem Cell Research is another because federal funding is used for a number of research projects for a variety of diseases.

Well yes Kelraz but my point is the govt needs to get out of the business of marshalling private lives period.
The reason I don't want the govt involved in stem cell research is exactly that Kelraz. Why do the research for companies that'll sell the cure to those that need it? Is there not enough money in the private industry to manage the funding? Maybe with govt regulations of course but still....

Get real dude. The only way there will be private research on ANYTHING is if it looks profitable, this is why government and university research is at the forefront of medical research.
The current crisis in health care is because it has been turned into a "for profit issue", that you can surely understand is the shame of America and is so blatantly obviously not working.

I have serious issue with the for profit angle here and that's why I'm asking why we should be subsidizing the bottom line for the private companies.

I think right now we have a serious issue that if we don't as a nation step in and shore these things up we are facing a collapse that we will not recover from. The secret is not so much in the cash given but how that cash is managed and used by those industries. As we see now, there is no management of the situation after the cash is given.
Can government do that? It sure can, it did it with WWII, the Marshall Plan, it did it with the space program and it did it with many disaster responses pre-Katrina.
The anti-government governments of the 80's and of this new century have really been nothing more than the, sometimes not so hidden, manipulations of the largest corporations.
Probably my most defining factor of proof of corruption and the acceptance of it came during this last campaign when John McCain stated something to the effect of: "The corruption in Washington has caused many good people to end up in prison" You know what? You are either corruptible or not you can be bought off or you can't.
It is not Washingtons fault that these people get corrupted, it's their fault,. They make the choice to take the payoff when they could very easily call the payer to task and "hang them".
It was that one line from McCain that truly cemented my support for Obama he has so far in every aspect been accountable for every move he's made. When he isn't I'll call him out just like I did Bush.

A lot of those executive orders are rescinding nominally illegal executive orders from Bush3, so I'm not too shocked or excited.

The research funding issue you bring up is complicated. Historically, what happens is that the government, via the NSF and the DoD (unfortunately in my opinion but regardless) etc, gives money to universities to purse things, and then if you have a workable product the students form companies and move on from there. This left a large question of intellectual property because any government funded public university project is technically owned by the public.
Starting with the Defense Department, funding and projects were moved into large companies, which stepped around the IP and security issues but resulted in research for their bottom lines -- the case is probably most egregious in the case of pharmaceuticals because you have billions going into treating baldness and existing vaccines and antibiotics for real problems going underproduced; however this applies to nearly every privatized research concern in every field.
I'm personally of the opinion that given the public domain, any and all research results from the public should be available to everyone. There are people doing this, you can look at the public versus private genome projects. Research in the public domain keeps the knowledge benefitting everyone and doesn't block anyone from building a business on it -- it used to be you didn't need information asymmetry to make money.

Thanks for the info Malse, ah and I wasn't shocked at Obama's moves as I realize it's common practice.
