McCain cannot go door to door because voters would then get to see him close up without makeup and he would no doubt show some signs of the fatigue that accompanies the rigors of going door to door and trying to make your points while staying on message. His handlers would not want such a loose give and take that could trigger his temper with the wrong questions being asked.
