With the number of folks leaving HBO due to the way they have handled their 'series' projects, I wonder how much budget they will have to do justice to this. Any good rendering of these fantasy books to screen requires a hefty expenditure.

Hell yeah - it better be as good as I hope!

There is no way HBO will be able to do this series justice.

I mourn this move ;( Anyone that thinks the works of Mr Martin will be carried true to the screen obviously didn't get the political complexity that is his works.

Any money on how it will get bent around to be anti-bush?

Being one of those that told HBO to kiss my ass, I will have to wait and watch for a review if and when it does finally get shown. I have low expectations of HBO's handling of the project, based on their history.

It will take place in Iraq.

Based on their history?

HBO has produced the best television of the last 20 years.

Rome
The Sopranos
The Wire
Six Feet Under

Those worried about HBO not being able to capture the grandeur of ASoIF ought to go back and watch Rome.

Rome was mediocre, but otherwise /agree

I watched Rome, it has nothing on the myriad of backstories and political intrique that Mr Martin brought to bear in his series.

This will be god awful as I doubt any broadcast or premium station/channel has the chops to make it true to the books.

I don't see how anyone could think differently unless they read the crib notes version ;P

And they dropped Carnivale with no notice; they dropped Tombstone with no notice; they had a haphazard schedule with the Soprano series; and I have no idea if John from Cincinnatti will actually be a completed series, much as I enjoyed that along with the others I mentioned.

HBO, at the least with these programs mentioned, displayed a complete lack of respect for it's viewers, IMO.

They canceled Deadwood too, which was a great show.

The Sopranos craziness was apparently 100% David Chase though. He insisted on delivering the seasons whenever he felt like it, or not at all.

Heh...I thought I was the only one that liked that show.

Doh, I said Tombstone when I meant Deadwood. I am messing up names a lot lately.

A bit of interesting trivia, at least for me, is that I actually have an Al Swearingen living on my mail route.
