Don't get me wrong, the American election is interesting. Certainly such money and celebrity doesn't exist elsewhere in democracy - but every day there are endless threads about McCain, Obama, the campaign, Palin... it's just endless. Couldn't we create a single thread, or a single section, or something?
I'm not stupid (eh he) to realise that 99.1% of us here are from the US, but there MUST be other stuff going on!?!? There's economic crisis, political turmoil in S Africa, Zimbabwe, oil wars in Nigeria, change of policy in Pakistan, just something other than what new words McCain spoke last night on the telly!!!!!
Have a think about it. Mucho gracias.

I went back to look at how threads were in 2004 and this was the first post sitting there.

Man you're a lot nicer now. I'll attempt to make a non-election thread when I can.

Okay I'll bite Halo, How about... Pirates?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7637257.stm
There have been, as you know, numerous reports on the increase in piracy off the waters of Somalia, but most of the seizures have been, shall we say, small potatoes. This is the first case I've heard of piracy operations in this part of the world sophisticated enough to steal *tanks*.
Piracy is actually hugely underreported worldwide (and is a major problem plaguing container shipping across the pacific, but usually much more commonly of the fraud variety), but given the general state of anarchy in Somalia, as well as just on general principles, I'm thinking we should be a *wee* bit concerned...
On the upside, maybe the upsurge in piracy may help us combat global warming ;)

To most of us that frequent the board, the economic crisis (which there are several threads about) and the election are just about the most important things going on around us. It would seem that those things would be the most active threads all things considered.

Start some threads Halo, I'll try to say something intelligent.
I've been following the news about Zimbabwe and the pirates Nydia posted. But there isn't a whole lot I can do about either issue. They just sort of 'are.' The election and economics hit home, so I can see why those stir people up.
In the middle of it all we had a great thread about rape, and how to handle money, and a bit about Canadian elections. Those of you not in the US should to stir some crap up.

With that said, FUCK YOU!

edit: Good topic Nydia! Do you think that the endemic pirating around the Horn of Africa reveals a huge weakness in American global policing? Has America "called the legions home"??

Better to have these issues partitioned into their own threads than fused together into a single morass of thread-text. What you're asking is similar to asking that all your "History Debate" threads be put under one title ("But after the 8th time? Surely that's, like, spam?").
I love it.

I may not have my facts right, but I was under the impression that this has been going on for a while, and is only now receiving major press? Sanchek, you're going to become a very bitter old man. How far back did you have to go to dig up that quote?
Sure, I could have started a new thread on the piracy issue, but I was late for work and being cordial to Halo. Feel free to move it if it'll untwist your knickers...

I went back 3 entire hours and read the thread DiscW posted?
Nydia Ywalmoriel

Yes, but the quote *itself* was from 2004 (and I'll admit that I hadn't had time to click the link earlier, and Discw was referring to Halo's *attitude* in any case), and isn't necessarily germane to the current preferences and climate of the board (or those of us who remain on it). In any case, split to your heart's content if it's eating at you that much, just don't be surprised when conversations get lost/die and people get irritated again.

So defensive! It's not my fault you didn't bother to read the link before knee jerking.
Nydia Ywalmoriel
09-26-2008, 12:21 PM
Not a knee-jerk - just amusement at your need to dig through another old thread (as you have with others in the past) in order to provide justification for your own knee-jerk moderation choices and/or evidence of user 'hypocracy', my despotic friend :).
Regards,
Nydia
And, on the Pirate issue, I'm swamped at work and about to hit the road, but I did have a link to a good indepty article about piracy on the Pacific a while back, and things *have* been getting a lot worse around the Horn of Africa in recent years, which begs the question of why these waters, with their proximity to the Gulf, being properly patrolled by the US, normally so concerned with all things oil?

I suppose if reading a linked thread is "digging through", Malse really was right about the Internet being write-only. What an interweb super sleuth I am!
I read a book written before 2004 once too, believe it or not!

Here's a cookie, and maybe it'll sweeten up that piss and vinegar a bit ;)...
I simply found it somewhat amusing (in addition to Halo's much milder bitch this time about the US election ;) ) that you felt the need to pick out a bit of tangentially related 'evidence' (from a moderator, poster, and friend sadly no longer in evidence) and hold it up as if to crow "Look, I, the great and powerful Oz, was right" ;)... And considering that I already 'mea culpa'd with regard to not havng scrolled down the previously-mentioned link, why you feel the need to flagellate the deceased equine escapes me.
Indeed, much more indignant knee-jerking going on *post* my needling than pre- :).
Nothing else to see here, except, perhaps, the pirates?
Have a good weekend all, I'm more or less off the wire until Tues...

Jedd's thread on Matt Lauer, Rover's "if you are not scared..." thread, and all the stuff on the bailout are non-election in the past 12 hours. Only half the threads are really election related, though most of it is US centric being that area impacts the majority of our readers.
I don't think anyone would object to more non-US stuff being posted, if you have anything worth discussion we should know about :) And I'm sure this'll pass in November.

Re: pirates,
The African pirate situation has been fairly bad for several decades, basically ever since the collapse of Somalia. It doesn't take a major naval presence to make piracy impracticable, but the combination of no effective government and runaway business corruption has provided the perfect environment for it.
Pirates need more than just ships to attack, the also need someplace to unload the stolen goods. The gray and black markets are largely the only markets in eastern Africa.

I agree with Halo in some regard (per his first post in this thread). It seems that everyone starts a new thread about the election every time they want to show a new YouTube video they found, or want to express some exclaimed one-sentence opinion on any given news article.
He isn't asking for a mod to combine it all for us, I think he is merely suggesting that we look at related threads and add to them before starting a whole new one just for one video or opinion or news item that has so much to do with tons of other threads on the first/latest page.

LOL, wasn't it Palimax that first posted that graph about the global warming affect on Pirates? I seem to recall him being involved in a similar discussion.

How funny that the FSM pirate graph could come up in conversations on two different boards in teh same day. I had a similar discussion about this today b/c of a derail about pirates and tanks and something someone saw on FoxNews...anyway, just thought I'd interject that it's ironic. Actually, I was thinking how nice it would be to have Puff based in the area and do some fly-bys whenever reports of pirate activity were heard, or when satellite pics were taken of them being at sea.
Puff would make short work of them. Hell, it would make short work of all the Somalian warlords and bad actors, heh.
Of course, that is using old-school weaponry, but still effective as anything else going.

Every lesbian i've ever known loves injection. just not from the likes of you or me. :D
I was not bieng knee-jerk in my statement of torpedoing the damn thing. It's way past time to take a hard stance on Somali pirating. Get off your ass George and call Vlad. we can make this a Bi-lateral move and use pressure from both side to get Ukraine to say "gee golly ok!"
Give them 3 hours to vacate the vessel and any attempt to unload anything other your thieving pirate asses will result in the timer hitting zero.
Let the Intrepid shoot first, the Howard 10 sec. later (they can use a coin toss for to determine Bow/Stern targeting) or hell go for full transparency and let the attack subs niether side will admit to having in the area do the shooting.
