Any old ivm/vv members still rolling around the mmo community? I'm thinking about picking up a game semi-hardcore this summer and would really prefer to play on a server with some people I already know.

SUP DADDIO!!

/inhale.

Myself, Episte, Ibiza, Spite, and Parni all still play EQ. Taleran too but on a different server.

Last time i had contact. Immort, Samanusuke, Drizzen, L2 and a few other IvM/EW were on WoW. Cant remember the server, i assume L2 will post it here soon.

would it even be viable for me to pick up eq again at this point? I still have Daddio but his gear is probably more suited for a museum than a raid zone. I'm not terribly opposed to starting a new character but the equip problem comes up again. I think I still have a lot of plat left on the account to twink with but I'd imagine the zones are pretty desolate unless you have a guild to travel with.

We've had people return to EQ after disappearing for multiple years before. If you have a lot of time on your hands, getting caught up won't be difficult.

We actually have a few people around your level (70, right?) that recently returned and are looking to catch up too. Deien, Valeside (Airomas), Manelr, and Scrapley come to mind.

Does EQ now have pets for every class, even if non combative? I always wanted one to follow me around :( Cleric hammer would die after like 5 seconds of no mobs to hit =\

They should have made Mistwalker a 1hb so clerics could use it!

Palarran
06-02-2008, 05:21 PM
Yes, every class can get familiars (from clicky items) now. Most of the semi-useful ones unfortunately come from the LoN trading card game, but you can get a few in game relatively easily now. For example, here's a goblin familiar:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=53299

A couple of the veteran AAs--abilities that you get for having subscribed to EQ for X number of years--summon pets that follow you around for a period of time too. The third year veteran AA summons a little halfling ("a jester of Bristlebane") that tells bad jokes, grows and shrinks people, gives players random illusions, summons food and drink (which is usually, but not always, poisoned), and--if you're really lucky--fills up your mana bar. As a result, on long and difficult raids it's quite common to have 30+ jesters up at once.

The fifth year veteran AA summons a pet that occasionally casts heals and buffs. It's not as useful as it sounds, but it's good for soloing on occasion, I suppose.

This is me in mushroom illusion with a mushroom familiar:

I've been exploring for the past couple of days. The music got me, and seeing my old guild. I was really surprised how nostalgic I felt towards the game world - I've played a number of MMOs since then, and none of them were as emotionally involved as EQ.

The combined EC/WC zone threw me for a loop. I was lost for a moment there.

My thoughts:
Downloaded and logged in...As was said it brought back memories. BUT after going to WoW, LoTRO, EvE, ect, the graphics in EQ need a serious overhaul. Even at 1900x1200, they aren't that great. Decent, but not great.
First thing i did was get a new UI as the original one is horrible imo.
As i logged in 8-9pm it didn't seem to be that crowded on Tribunal (AKA the old ay ro server) At least not like i remembered it being. Plus trying to remember the spells and commands takes a little getting used to. Comes back to you tho.
On the plus side, Crys is level 70 and still about 9k HP's. Not great i imagine but i thought she was a few thousand below that. Beastlord is 65 and i actually remember how to play it fairly well still.
Didn't really see anyone i know on, but probably not on that late. May keep it up after the free trial but will have to play it a bit to see if it keeps my interest up still.

No idea, haven't spoken to him for quite a while now =P.

I logged in yesterday and managed to find a couple people to chat with. Funny how some things I just totally forgot and some I didn't even have to think about. My cleric is so far behind that doing anything would be comical! Apparently tanks have 30k hps now and clerics have 20k-ish mana. *giggle*

I'll probably log on again and try to find more old friends that are still hanging around. :)

I thought the same thing about the graphics being dated, but I still miss raiding in EQ! Nothing has come close to EQ for me.

Maybe folks play it because unlike WoW it has tons of endgame content.

Maybe folks play it still because WoW is the shortbus of gaming. Even 3 year olds can top out a toon.

Maybe folks still play it because of the 8 million or so that play WoW over half are preadolescent kids (or they act like it).

Tons of reasons to play EQ over WoW. I played it for awhile and came back to EQ glad to have a toon/game with depth instead of mild eye candy.

Our main tank is over 42k raid buffed hp, and me as a bard, I am around 33.5k raid buffed.

Of course I am in one of the 2 highest end guilds serverwide, and I'm the second or third best geared bard in EQ.

Fandros

Palarran

If you're starting over, a shaman would make a good choice--they're one of the most flexible characters these days, and should be in moderate to high demand at all levels of the game.
Soloing: Reasonable ability; you'll be able to solo when necessary, though exp will be quite a bit slower than, for example, a necro soloing. Being a troll may help if you end up soloing since you'll be able to get a snare clicky.
Duoing: Shamans are by far the best all-around partner in a duo.
Grouping: Shamans fill two core roles (healing and slowing); just add a tank and up to 4 other people of just about any class, and you should have a capable group.
Raiding: With properly arranged groups, shamans contribute a tremendous amount of indirect damage by boosting others' melee damage. They also contribute a fair amount of healing, which is nearly always in short supply.

Taleren Bloodsong

I was hoping you would tell me to play a Bard, haha ah well. Thanks Tal.

Bards have been getting shit on by the devs. We are the only class that didn't get any type 3 augs for our SoF gear. We are told repeatedly that certain features that every other class gets we can't/won't get because of coding limitations. We've had the same mod cap on our songs since Planes of Power. We've been told for 4 years that this would change and it hasn't.

I am well geared, but the only tangible upgrades I get (my hp/mana really aren't tangible upgrades anymore because they are for the most part irrelevant) are dps upgrades. Doesn't it seem wrong that bards at the high high end really only upgrade offense? The songs for SoF are horrible, so much to the point that of the 15ish songs I got in the expansion, I haven't even memorized 6 of them. My song power hasn't really gone up since Omens of War (which is about 3.5 years ago).

No, I wouldn't start a bard now. We have great tools if you want to group, and in that game, I really shine. If you want to raid, (and have people to help you level) I'd choose a berserker. If you want to solo AND be effective at the high end, that's why I'd pick a necromancer. Bards are still desired in the raid game, but that's more a product of there being few high end bards left and an assumption that we are more powerful than we really are. I basically add 12.5% dps to a dps person, and that's assuming they don't have an overhaste clicky. The rest of my songs are completely marginal in power.

Have they been having any server troubles? Tried logging in last night and wouldn't let me, but the web and every other mmo i play was fine logging in and playing.
Does that sporadically then is fine later. (Go fig)
Did play my 56 bard a little the day before and still seemed i could twist somewhat. They nerf that much?
What EQ1 i think needs is if they updated the graphics to about the EQ2 level at least. Probably would drag a lot of players back i think.

Ibudin

Palarran

As far as graphics go, the player models are the main things that need to be updated, along with continuing to do graphical revamps of a few old zones. (Visit Nektulos for a good example of this. A number of old zones have already been revamped, but some have been better received than others. Freeport is one of the worst because the layout of the city was drastically changed, while Nektulos was well received because things are more or less where they used to be.)

As for server troubles, there was a patch server problem on Tuesday. I didn't play last night but I'm not aware of any other server issues.

Yea, been exploring a little. Pounded through lvl69 into 70 and turned up my speakers loud so I could hear it go DING. I still have 94 unused AA points with really no idea what to spend them in. No idea on level spells, I am in fact hunting the same place I was when I logged out 4 years ago, the Tables at fire. Seems you get a heck of lot more exp per mob now than before.

Taleren Bloodsong
06-08-2008, 08:07 PM
There's an xp bonus if you are below 750 aa now, that's probably what you are seeing ibudin.

Ibudin
06-08-2008, 08:21 PM
Ah must be went from 70 half way through 72 today doing the same thing lol, all with spells 67 and below. Final made the run to the spell vendor, reminded me of the old days having to run across 4 different zones. New pet, we shall see how things go. Hope to make it to 80 before the free stuff runs out.

Taleren Bloodsong
06-08-2008, 09:23 PM
At 80, mobs at table are still 4-5% aa. At the rate I can kill them, i burn double xp there often when I have a spare half hour. About 4.5 aa still in a half hour at 80. Not as fast as before, but better xp than I as a bard can get elsewhere at 80. Again, this is solo, I can get much faster in a group.

There will be much better places for you to kill as you level. I melee solo, so there's a limit on how strong what I kill is. Bard dot damage is marginal, so without my melee, on higher level stuff, it's faster to plow fast through light blues.

You'll be able to kite things in SoF that will still produce tons more aa in a given amount of time due to your superior kite damage as a necro. 4-5% is with no xp bonus, I know on my 75 bst, with 170 aa, a mob at tables is like 18-19% of an aa. Of course he kills much more slowly than my bard. If he were geared equal to my bard(and aa'ed), he'd probably get an extra aa or so in the same timeframe.

The experience bonus on AA is 2.5% and scales down every 5 aa to 0 at 750 AA.

I have a ton to re learn thats for sure, was able to play all day yesterday because of nasty storming weather outside. EQ still is fun. Thanks for the info Tal. Being 72, can you think of any areas with good exp for a soloer other than POF? I love to group, they are just hard to come by. So far in general chat I have ended up helping people with epic 1.5 mobs, those excursions are huge cluster f&cks but I laugh doing them!
