So I'm planning on (finally) getting a current generation system, and honestly don't follow their games in close detail. I know the basics but not everything.
The only exclusives that I know and care about are Mass Effect 2, Fable 2/3, and Forza on xbox, and Final Fantasy 13, MGS4, Gran Turismo and Disgaea 3 on PS3. ME will be out on PC too, though dunno if I'll be able to run it when it comes out. But there's got to be a ton of excellent ones I don't know about. Most games I'm interested in are on both (gta4, rock band/guitar hero, madden, etc)
The free online gaming and supposed technical issues I keep hearing about with the 360 have me leaning towards a PS3, but I'm not totally sure and have a few months till I'll have the money. While I do enjoy achievements, I'm not obsessed about them, but I'm curious how PS3's compare to xbox live?
So, anyone have thoughts on why I should go one way or the other?
P.S. No I'm not interested in a Wii, and don't care much about blu-ray.

I own 2, 360s and 1 PS3. I use the PS3 for a glorified Blu Ray player up until I bought a different one a while back. There were very few titles on the PS3 that I liked enough to own, Little Big Planet and MG4.
The 360 is a different story for me. I have tons of games and I have two so that we can play together at the same time in co-op mode on most games. I like the marketplace of the 360 for games, movies, addons, and such. I just never felt the PS3 marketplace was as friendly or easy to navigate (IMO).
Some benefits the PS3 has is that you can connect it to your network and stream just about ANY format to it, mpeg, avi, etc the 360 requires some tweaking if you don't have a media center enabled PC. The PS3 will interface nicely with the PSP too. Built in wireless in the PS3 is nice too, but the 360 adapter is coming down in cost.
It's really a matter of preference, both are comparable in inital cost and I have yet to find a game that looks better on one platform over the other, they're pretty close IMO.
Regarding support/broken consoles... I have sent back both my PS3 and my 360 for issues. The PS3 it was a firmware upgrade from last year that screwed something up major and system restore etc didn't fix it. They knew they goofed and offered people to send them back for repair. It was seamless except I was required to have my receipt mailed/faxed to them. Because it was several months old and I couldn't find my receipt I had to contact Gamestop corporate and have them help me provide proof of purchase. Once that was done I was given shipping info and once I shipped and they got notification it was shipped a replacement model was on the way.
The 360 was just a matter of calling up giving the SN and address and a box arrived the next day. I sent my unit and about 4 weeks later I got a replacement one back. (ring of death was my killer)
FYI, my nephew is selling his less than 1yr old PS3, 2 controllers, 2 movies, and 2 games for $400. He has finally realized getting his car fixed is more important than games...he's keeping his 360 though ;)
games are Heavnly Sword, DC comics vs. Mortal Kombat
moves are 300 and Transporter 3
he purchased the additional warranty from game stop and will provide that info also.
If you're interested I can put you in touch with him.

Just to second Taleren, you probably will care about bluray in the reasonably near future.
I have a Ps3. from a pure gaming standpoint it's hard to not recommend the Xbox instead at this point, there are just more games of greater variety at this point. Live vs PSN is kind of a wash for actuall gameplay, but Live has a bunch more ancillary stuff. MGS4 and a few others on the PS3 have been incredible looking games, but at least in what I play the variety just isn't there.
The big differentiation between the two is in the home theatre space, the PS3 is an excellent player with Bluray, the Xbox isn't a terrible one that has better options from Netflix, etc.
Oh, and re "achievements" the PS3 has trophies which are functionally identical and identically insipid, and in most games interchangeable.

To be honest, if you don't care about Bluray now you probably won't ever, because in the next 5 years disc based media will probably be phased out and replaced by things like the Roku or Itunes. As more films are shot and edited at 4k (even things shot on film have been digitized to 2k in the past), there will probably be a demand for 4k at home as well, creating a new realm of product.
The reality is the damn discs can't spin fast enough to translate enough data and are very quickly being replaced in the television production side of the industry in exchange for tapeless media, its only a matter of time before the consumer side switches over as well.
(Mind you this is also coming from someone who spent about $1,000 on Blu-ray authoring software and a multi-disc burner)

Blueray players are fairly cheap these days. No reason to buy a PS3 for blueray anymore. Get a 360, has more games, and more games worth playing.
