View Full Version : Quantam of Solace

I thought Casino Royale was a Bond classic, the way they had updated the franchise in line with a new generation (more feelings, less woman slapping) while keeping the quality elements of the originals (stylish, sexy, down right hard arse) has meant that the new releases I believe will be just as popular for the current generation X than it did for us growing up (and still now :P).
Obviously, then, I'm looking madly forward to Quantam of Solac. I was a bit 'eek about them continuing a story line that I felt was pumped to the max in the first movie, but if it helps explain the ongoing bad-guy arc as well as developing Bond as a new agent with a chip on his shoulder, then that could work IMO. I like that they're bringing Felix into it more (he's got an entire story-arc to himself) and opening up Bond's relationship with M.
Anywho, off to see it tommorrow morning (10am!). Anyone else looking forward to it? I'll post a review tommorrow night, for anyone interested.

A kinder, gentler Bond?
I miss Sean Connery in that role, LOL!

Well not sure about gentler - reviews have Bond going border-line psychotic in his quest for revenge in Solace.
Can'ne wait!

URRONG!
First of all, I don't think James Bond: Gentleman Spy has ever had a rape featured in any of the movies in which he was involved.
Second, there's a BIG difference between reality and fantasy.
Isn't there a bridge you could be under?

It's just yet again another post from you showing your disdain for women. Yeah they deserve to get slapped around even in 'fantasy land.'

Next week? What the fuck. It doesn't come out until the 14th here in DC. I need to move. I keep seeing trailers, and on USA all weekend they are airing every Bond film thus far.
I don't like Craig as much as Brosnan, to be honest, and not nearly as much as Moore or Connery, but I'm sure he'll grow on me. I mean, the guy does most of his own stunts, that's pretty hardcore.

I happen to know why Sixee's divorced and despite what you may think it's not b/c of any fault of his own. I'd be careful tossing out comments like "well at least I have a wife and family" one never knows what karma might lurk around the corner; life comes at you pretty fast some days. It's one thing to be thankful for what we have and another altogether different making derogatory comments to another fellow b/c he's divorced or had a tough time/relationship. I'd say that's pretty shallow. And if I'm not mistaken Sixee is quite happy with his current family; he's just no longer married to the mother of his son.
I will take some chill pills please, I'm dealing with DST b/c IBM are doodoo heads.

Okie dokie folks, here's my review of Quantam of Solace, I won't give away too much of the plot but be warned, there are some minor [[[SPOILERS]]] ahead...
I liked Quantam of Solace. As I was watching it, I gradually felt a bit let down, but when I came out of the theatre I found myself talking about all the plot twists and double-dealings - and there are *many* in this movie - and slowly getting a grasp on them to the improvement of the movie as a whole in my mind. Indeed, there is more dialogue and twisting to this movie. They took the best of Casino Royale plot and twist wise, ie the Vesper betrayal, and used them to smart effect in Quantam. But that also created a problem. They stuffed them in left, right, and centre. The main story line is so riddled with side-twists, spin-off plots and double-dealings, that it is sometimes very hard to keep track of what is actually happening. Sadly, I felt this made the movie a bit of a mess. Infact, my one major criticism is that Quantam was far less solid as Casino Royale - as a movie driven by a story line, I felt let down. And for me, it all comes down to the fact that if you hadn't watched Casino Royale, indeed several times, you'd be utterly lost in the sea of story-lines that is Quantam of Solace. Let me give you a for-instance, without revealing any major spoilers. The new Bond Girl meets Bond, thinks Bond is trying to kill her, so tries to kill him. Goes back to The new bad guy, whose girlfriend she turns out to be, but then tries to kill him, gets rescued by Bond and drops out of the movie for a little While. She then turns up at a party again, drunk, tries to kill the new bad guy again, is again rescued by Bond but abandons him when he's ambushed by M and other agents at a hotel. But *then* turns up to rescue him again to which they both aid eachother in a final vendetta against their mortal enemies. The Bond girl plot had been twisted and turned so many times you began to feel it all very pointless. And then there's Felix, who starts out bad, but then seems good, who then betrays Bond to the Bad Guy, but then seems good when he gives Bond info, but then bad when Bond gets ambushed at a bar by Americans, and again it seems Felix has led him on. It's like WHY? I don't mind a plot twist or two, but at this point I'm starting to feel sea-sick.
This all detracted very much from the central storyline, which is, essentially: Bond's revenge hunt for Mr. White, the guy responsible for killing his first love, Vesper. He's the guy Bond shoots in the leg at the very end of Casino Royale. The movie begins brilliantly, taking up this storyline of vengence with a gusto, nodding back to the Bonds of Brosnan. You get a real sense of Bond's grievence at the loss of Vesper, his hatred for White, and his almost psychopathic thirst for blood from those responsible for her death. The dungeon scene where Mr Blood begins to reveal that he is actually part of a global organisation - so secret that Mi6 and the CIA have no clue it even exists - is perhaps the best of the movie. Very gritty, very Bond. The quest for Mr White (who escapes in the dungeon) provides the key story-arc, but you could go a good 30 minutes without it being a part of the movie, coming back to it and thinking "oh yeah, forgot about this part". Had they made it the constant focus of the movie, I think it would have been to its credit generally. As it is, Bond can only find Mr White through the new bad guy, seemingly head (though he is a mere figurehead) of this new Organisation, and this is where the movie gets side-tracked the most. The problem is, this guy isn't really bad, I mean you don't generally hate him much, and he's certainly not crucial to the Vesper-White storyline that Bond *must* see him dead or he's, for want of a better word, lost. Indeed the new bad guy's master plan is simply to control the water resources of Bolivia, in order to engieer a drout - yes, nasty, but "Bond nasty"? I just wasn't convinced, and what did it have to do with anything else, except that it was the Organisations current project? I was a bit dissapointed in this respect.
But don't be downcast. I loved this Bond. And I mean Daniel Craig's Bond. He is more refined, he is more sure of himself, and he's more honed in his killing skills. This is Connery Bond at this moment, not Moore, or Brosnan, and it looks good on screen. Craig's Bond in Quantam is a killing machine, his moves, his action, his skill, it's at its height. He dupes the CIA, he knocks out a lift (sorry, elevator) full of Mi6 agents, he massacres the Organisation's lackeys. And he's doing it rogue, 'cause in this Bond it's not just the Organisation who are out to stop Bond, its Mi6 and the CIA too. They've all lost patience with Bond who, in his quest for revenge, is upsetting the global, realpolitika balance of oil and high-politics of the Western nations. But that just makes Bond more dangerous, indeed the Craig portrays a rogue Bond, and in my opinion it's the best kind. There's a scene, when the entire Organisation are secretly meeting while attending a massive outside opera, and Bond manaouvres himself in position to expose them all by calling them out on their secret radio-wave channel - it's genius, he's desperate, and by the end he's border-line crazy in his quest for revenge.
The action, the music - The White Stripes and Alicia Keyes provide an excellent theme song - the effects, especially a fight scene in a church in Siena, all of it makes this a great Bond. I would definately say go and see it. I was dissapointed it ran at a little less than 1 and 3/4 hours, moving away from the 2.5-3hr Bonds of tradition. But it's all part of the post-Brosnan need to adapt the Bonds for a new generation, and movies today are short, and fast, and I think they've done well. As revolutionary as Casino Royale? No. As brilliant as From Russia With Love? No. Top 10 Bond? Yes, maybe Number 10.
Go see it.

jedd, Tal is engaging in the same antagonistic stuff with Sixee that I enjoy doing with you at times, and which Tal wastes no time in criticizing me for, so I agree that he needs to lighten up just as I have lightened up on you for the time being. I am not saying Sixee does not invite derision often, but Tal's comment on the family was way too crass and I would not even use that with you.
As for the movie, I will rent as well; like Fild I am seeing little in the way of movies right now that can entice me to the theatres. I still await "The Hobbit", with huge anticipation, as well as the remaining Potter movies.

Tal, please bear in mind that Sixee has created a situation for himself where most simply disregard him and his postings most of the time because of these very things you are stating. Halo, your description of the story reminds me of the Bourne Supremacy somewhat (more so then the first movie did). Is it as similar in certain ways as you made it sound?
Also, Daniel Craig always reminded me of someone but I couldn't figure out who until recently:

It is definately Borne-esque, more so than any other Bond movie. But it's not that they have Borne-envy, it just fits in with how they've re-dressed the early story of Bond, and how he came to be. You definately see a change from emotional sap in Casino Royale, to more of the cold-blooded killing machine of Connery/Brosnan Bonds.
I like Craig. I think he's done a terrific job, aided of course by what appears to be so far competent and capable writing and direction. I think he'll be the new Connery in the coming years.

Agree. He seems to be able to carry that sense of "detachment" that is Bond. Connery will always be Bond to many of us, but for me Craig looks more like the original than Moore or Brosnan.

I'm not sure I like the direction they are taking these action movies. They are all getting to emo to be honest. Bond is supposed to be a caricature of a super spy, no one would imagine a real spy would do all the shit he does. The Batman movie too, albeit successful, you didn't leave the theater thinking "man that kicked ass" so much as a little melancholy. I feel like they are taking a lot of the fun out of action movies.

Not to derail but Harvey died, Rachel died, the police commissioner died, all sorts of emo shit happened ... it was a cool movie, don't get me wrong, but it definitely had a depressing ending. It fits the Batman story, but I don't think we need Emo Batman, Emo Bond, Emo Superman, Emo Bourne, Emo everything - which is the new trend.

The thing to remember Kel is that this is early Bond. before he reached the status of super spy. he's supposed to be a little emo, a lot dark and not nearly as suave as the Bond we are accustomed to.

I like the direction some of these shows are going. Batman felt like a comic book for adults, especially if you compare it to the first Batman with Keaton/Nicholson. The storytellers aren't afraid to kill people, ruin the life of the hero, and everything doesn't end roses.
As long as the entire soundtrack isn't by My Chemical Romance, and we don't have Toby Maguire dancing around in a suit, I'm cool with it.

I just think there's probably a reason this is one of the worst reviewed Bond movies ever (and I enjoyed it!), and its because its trying to be something it isn't.

It fits the Batman story, but I don't think we need Emo Batman, Emo Bond, Emo Superman, Emo Bourne, Emo everything - which is the new trend.
Superman, all gothed out, makes my skin crawl....
However, Batman was always supposed to be a little dark....Actually a whole lotta dark.
Makes me think of an alternate storyline I had created in my head:
If Bruce Wayne's parents hadn't been killed, would his personality allowed him to become a serial killer? He's just the "other side of the coin" of the Joker. Without his parent's murder, he still had the potential to become psychopathic....and the only hero I could think of that would have been able to oppose him would have been, Superman.....

speaking of Batman I just preordered Dark Knight on BluRay. I thought the movie was excellent and agree with others that it's supposed to be dark. the others? probably not so much but Batman was the original goth.

I preordered batman on blu-ray last week too. Can't wait to get that and then wait for my blu ray player for christmas! (don't really want to watch it on the ps3 in my office as it's on a smaller 720p tv).
Already bought Indiana Jones on blu -ray (which I did watch on the ps3), and a few cartoons for my daughter (including wall -e) for christmas. Can't wait for my new toy!

Nice Tale!!
I have the PS3 but do plan on a tv and blue ray upgrade next year. I can't complain about the picture from the PS3 to the 51 projection tv tbh. It's much better than regular dvd.

I have the PS3 but it's on a 52inch 1080p :D
Likewise I purchased Wall-E as well as Batman, KungFu Panda, Hulk, Ironman, and Indiana Jones... all the great movies of the summer!

My bigger tv is only a 46, but I don't have my ps3 on it so I can play tiger woods while the wife is watching her shows. I have the wii on the main tv since it's the system that guests play when we want to bowl or shit.
I had the ps3 up there til we finished the basement, and I got the new tv for down there. I didn't want to spend an extra 300 bucks to go from 720p to 1080p on a 32inch lcd for my office though. And really, it's hard to enjoy a movie while I sit in my desk chair and my wife sits on the guest bed in my office.
Sleeping Beauty was nice for my daughter being that the Blu-Ray came with the dvd also. So she's been able to view that. If they'd done that with Tinkerbell and Wall-E, she'd have already gotten to watch them. Well probably not Wall-E yet since it just came out Tuesday, and my parents would like to watch it this weekend. Instead we watched Kung Fu Panda last night, and she'll get Wall-E for Christmas.
Friday morning, Terminator 2 and Transformers will be 10 bucks on blu-ray at best buy, so I'll have to get those. Terminator 2 was the first movie I bought on DVD in 2000, and it's what sold me on the format. I can't wait to watch it in blu-ray. Transformers as a whole was meh to me, but the first half hour will be to die for on blu-ray I am sure. I wish I'd waited to buy Iron Man on blu-ray as well; I thought it was a very well done movie. I just bought it on dvd though, so I can't justify buying it this soon on blu-ray.

Has anyone here seen Hancock? Is it worth buying on blu-ray?

I heard mixed reviews about it but I have not seen it yet. I will add that to my list.
YAY for releasing Transformers on BluRay it was one of the first on HD-DVD. I'll add that to my collection too. I love that BluRay prices are going down these days compared to a few years ago and I love that my Blockbuster has had them for rent since April. I tend to watch it see if it's worth it and then buy it or pass it to a friend who has a BluRay recorder.
Tal, I understand what you mean about not wanting to justify $300 but SAMs had a deal I couldn't pass up on a 37inch LCD 1080p recently and we bought it. It may sound sad but Leah and I both like to do the same thing so if we're playing 360 we both want to be in the same room playing 360. She has hers I have mine and we just cart the 37inch LCD upstairs or downstairs depending on what we're doing. We can't cart the 52inch since it's wall mounted or I'd so do that haha. Wow, I sound like an uber nerd huh? =\ Anyway I notice a huge difference in picture quality between 720 and 1080 anymore and between regular HD and BluRay. Since getting my new receiver that does the lossless audio I rarely even want to go to the theatre to see a movie it sounds and looks so much better in my living room with less idiots to deal with. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long for it to make it out to BluRay so I tend to cave and go anyway. It's amazing the quality you have in your home these days and I love it!

SOLD, I'll have to hit Best Buy to backfill my collection that's mostly dvd format. I def want Transformers in blueray and already have Hulk/Ironman/Indiana Jones and now Hellboy2.
Thanks for the info Taleren.

Don't buy Hancock, it's a lot of bollocks.
'The thing to remember Kel is that this is early Bond. before he reached the status of super spy. he's supposed to be a little emo, a lot dark and not nearly as suave as the Bond we are accustomed to.'
- Exactly my thoughts too. These new Bond movies tell an overarching story, it is a continuity that the earlier ones lacked. I kind of like it.

Please, please, please stop using the term 'emo.' It's like I'm back working near hot topic again. GAH FLASHBACKS
