While I certainly am not advocating, nor condemning, the use of LSD, or "acid", I was lucky enough to be still in my youth during the era of the Timothy Leary led movement of "turn on, tune in, drop out" mentality. My teenage years were spent as a wannabe "hippie", prior to joining the Army at 17; the military really opened my eyes to recreational drug use.
The impact of this discovery was huge, not just on pop culture but on an entire generation's revolt against it's parent's values and outlook. Literature, music, movies, and so much more was impacted by the drug culture which in a sense "mushroomed" from the sterile labs that brought us LSD, and assorted other fun stuff.
A favorite quote, by Reverend Jim, of 'Taxi': "If I had known I was going to live this long, I never would have done all those drugs in the 60's".
Albert Hofmann lived to the age of 102. Did his experience with LSD contribute to his longevity?

I'm of the opinion that an occasional synaptic cleansing with LDS or that class of hallucinogens certainly couldn't hurt :). It's one of those drugs that I think many people would benefit from doing once - I took it in a positive setting back in 1986 and it did, in fact, show me things I had never seen before about my nature and was liberating on a very deep level.
RiP Albert Hoffman, and thanks for all the fish :)

Not to do a derail from my own thread, but I want to mention along the lines of "synaptic cleansing" the use of certain organic substances, i.e.; mushrooms. The Carlos Castenada books introduced many to the religious, and non-religious, ritualistic use of organic substances.
My only complaint about mushrooms was the perpetual upset stomach that accompanied their ingestion.
/sigh

Indeed they did; I think I still have his first three books in paperback around here someplace...
I only did mushrooms once, as a tea, which minimized the upset stomach but also isn't the best way to ingest them as the alkaloids aren't very water soluble. One of the most interesting ways I've seen to prepare them was to extract the psilocybin via osmosis in honey (which also turns it a very Alice-in-Wonderland cobalt blue)...
Aside from the universal desire for human beings to alter their consciousness, I think many of our indigenous cultures were onto something with regard to the use of hallucinogens for 'spiritual'/therapeutic purposes. How'd western civilization end up with all the crappy drugs?

I did 'shrooms twice. Both times I had horrible experiences. Had bad trips, which I am well aware is abnormal with mushrooms. I did LSD numerous times and never had the negative experience I did with shrooms. This is counter to most people I've talked too.

Never do acid while sitting around a campfire at night while one of your friends plays an electric guitar using a battery powered amplifier and the cops drive up the fire road you are sitting near and you have no shoes on and you decide that talking to a cop while you are in severe hallucination mode would be far from a cool situation and you decide to run and hide behind trees for the next 7 hours because you are really certain the cop is walking right behind you.
IMHO!
PS... One of the best quotes from Albert Hoffman "While riding my bicycle I was certain I was rooted to one spot however my friend had told me we were going quite fast" Classic...just plain classic.

My experiances were both quite frequent in my youth and entirely positive. no further comment.

I'll echo velvets thoughts on that. I always laugh when I see a movie with people taking LCD or Mushrooms and the way they will act...my wife don't get it. She never did it in her youth.

I did Shrooms a bunch last year. I just can't take it anymore. Most of the time I would be fine, but every once in a while, especially on an eighth or more, I'd have to work very hard to keep my thoughts in a positive direction. When I come down I feel like my brain did a million push ups. I'm just mentally expired.
Plus I hate getting nauseous when they start to kick in. And they taste like shit to eat, no matter what you mix them with.
Stay green. It makes videogames 10x better, cures nausea as opposed to bringing it, and will make food the most amazing thing in the world!
