He was a conservative that could make some cringe, and make others hopeful. He believed in the Republican Party of Lincoln, that was accepting of others and for civil rights.

I have longed for his return to the national political scene for many years.

I was totally unaware he was battling cancer. He might not have had views that many here would agree with, but he was one of the few that would always respect your right to hold different ideas, and would enjoy debating them with you.
