Paul Newman portrayed the character of Ari Ben Canaan in the movie Exodus. That movie was based on real events, and the character on a real person. Yossi Harel (the real-life Ari Ben Canaan) lived a long, fruitful life dedicated to the ideal of helping Jews reach their "biblical homeland" and have the opportunity to be a part of the nation of Israel once again. He has died at the age of 90.
The telling of the story of the Exodus, by Uris in book form and then the movie with a stellar cast, is the primary connection many have with Israel and the conflicts it has both endured and fomented. It is easier for many to hold onto a glamorous telling of a story than to take a deeper look and acknowledge the ugly truths that accompany most stories. But, that this man lived that story, for good or bad, is worth acknowledging too.
