My general question is this: What systems (mobos, CPUs, etc.) are compatible with DDR ram higher than PC3200 (DDR400)? Lately I've noticed a lot of advertising going on for speeds like PC3500, PC4200, etc., but little mention about what type of system supports it. Is it for Canterwood chipsets or what? Thanks in advance for any answers and insight. :)

I have a question I hope you guys can answer for me. I currently have a p4 2.4 gighz with 1gig of pc2700 ram. I want to buy something faster, currently thinking pc3200. But I am also planing on building a athalon 64 system soon, and was wondering what ram they use, and if I could buy the same kind now and use it on my p4. If anyone can suggest a faster or better buy for the money ram wise , please do. Im not real up to date as to whats out there. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Not a large enough difference between PC2700 and PC3200 to buy a new set for your existing PC. Currently Athlon 64 based-systems (at least the FX ones) use ECC-Registered DDR RAM usually at PC3200 speed, but you're not going to be able to use that kind on your P4. Just stick with your current setup until you build a new one. The reason they use the ECC stuff is that the CPUs and chipsets run so similar to servers (making the RAM a little more expensive than the standard kind :( ). Hope this helps, Chanur.

You can actually slow your system down if you buy faster ram that isn't in synch with your chip's clock/bus speed. There is a good guide to read on www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) that will get you "up to speed."

Unless you plan on overclocking the system (and thus change the underlying bus speed of the processor), buy pc3200 for a modern 200mhz bus (800mhz by Intel's marketing standards).

>ECC-Registered DDR RAM

99% certain the new 64's coming out of amd no longer need registered ram (mainly the 939's)

Does AMD have way too many pinset choices on Athlon 64's or is it just me?

754 and 939 is alot of choices?

Don't forget 940 (the original FXs).

940 is the fx-51 right? those are no longer supported

754 and 939 are the only current pinsets still being produced then? My mistake...

Also, like someone said, the new boards, are supposed to support the non ecc ram, as well as having pci express, The only reason people use the pc3500 or higher, is because, there system is overclocked, requiring greater speeds from the memory.
