Sorry for not enough info. But it works with other blizzard games too(or will eventually).

It is nice, the other night was talking to Fil on another server. It is like IM across all realms for WOW atm.

Or if someone in your guild is on SC2 at release and you mounting up for a raid you can send them a tell in SC2 asking if they want to come.

Is this going too far?

Yeah, I think so.

They are wanting to make it so that your realID is visible when you post on the official forums.

Here is the link:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25712374700&sid=1

Essentially when you post on the official forums, your real name is displayed along with character, server, guild, etc. Sounds like a bad idea no? Well one blue poster was like oh hey here is an example see it’s perfectly safe. Check this link out below to see how that went.

That's awesome. I wonder how many million manginas are about to be exposed.

well you can circumvent it. one of my friends has his name associated with a fictional character in a book and no one has called him on it. but it is funny to see his name in my realID list. I don't have allot of people there and I don't mind people knowing my name but there are some wierdos out there I figure I should limit my exposure to said wierdos.

I just can't imagine why they want to divulge our names on the forums of all places. At least in game we get to pick and choose who sees it.

Get used to it; it's a sign of things to come. We're still living through the Wild West years of the Internet. Decades from now, it will be unbelievable that people were able to stake claims on websites so easily, remain largely anonymous, avoid taxation, etc.

It sucks, but there's no avoiding that trend as long as the developed world is so invasively governed.

I think its a pretty solid idea, their forums are a cesspool of uselessness because of the "b-net kiddies" running rampant.

Don't want your real name out there - don't post on the forums. At least the Anne Coulter and Perez (Mario) Hilton and Howard Sterns of the world don't hide their flames behind anonymity.

Go spend 5 minutes reading the WoW official forums, and you'll understand why this was long overdue.

I find it pretty amusing that the game that is trying to crowdsource the nannying of their retarded playerbase is (well, nominally anyway) online role playing. Whether it's needed or not, coming in this way is just going to be a world of hilarity to watch from a distance.

I have and do. I spend allot of time in the priest forums and I've yet to see a reason for this level of retardedness. I do see dead forums in the future for them however if they go this route, much like EQ2's official forums died b/c of over zealous moderating the WoW forums will die.

Most of us we actively give our name out on a daily basis. Almost everyone I work with knows my name. I've given it to every girl I've slept with to every girl I've held hands with. The people I met at my (college, grade school, boy scout camp, church, gym) have my name. We give it out dozens of times a day - its printed right on our drivers license and credit card we share w/ the bouncers at bars, the merchants at stores, the authorities at places of transit and commerce. If you went to BlizzCon you'd introduce yourself as your name to every player and Blizzard employee you'd meet and they'd do the same to you.

In fact, I pay a fair sum of money every month to make sure that when someone googles my name they find me, specifically. No one has done any physical or emotional harm to me yet, and should it happen, its probably not going to be random_internet_dude01 ... its more likely going to be some dickhead who drank a few too many beers before getting in his car or something like that.

The part people don't like is that it is making it more like real life, which frankly it should have been all along. You wouldn't go up to some guy in a bar and call him names, so why should it be ok to do it online? Bullying has serious ramifications in real life, by cyber bullying is only beginning to be prosecuted.

I'll admit its a bit knee jerk and frankly if they took steps in the past (moderation, tying all characters to one account name so you couldn't make a level 1 flame alt, etc.) it probably wouldn't need this now, but with action so long overdue they had to do something drastic.

I think some of the people flipping out prolly don't want thier names known for umm legal reasons.

So why aren't you posting here under your real name?

I'd be surprised if anyone here didn't know my real name (Chad Horn) by now. My email (chadhorn@chadhorn.net) gives it all away even if someone didn't.

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea, but I can understand where that person is coming from.

That particular scenario illustrates the basic problem -- this is not mutual, equivalent exchange. Any number of people can use the information they get from RealID while still remaining effectively anonymous.

It will deterre some, sure, but not the vast majority who doesn't care.
On the other hand, it will probably scare more "good" posters.

Even if I never post there (living on shadowpriest.com :P ), I think it's a lose-lose decision.

On the other hand, anyone wanna try if US - EU connection works? It would be great to be again in touch with old EQers. :) (pm and all, you know the deal)

So you wouldn't care if I updated your board name to your real name, and all the bile you've been oozing lately started showing up when people searched for you professionally?

Kelraz Bladesinger

They're taking this idea back to the drawing boards due to the negative criticism and I anticipate them heading for middle ground (all posts tied to 1 user name tied to your characters)
