I set this up awhile back, but never got around to announcing it. It allows you to watch for new posts without having to refresh:

Good for leaving open in a browser window/tab while doing other things

I'm not sure yet how much load it puts on the server, but I believe it's probably enough less than frequent refreshes that it should basically be a wash. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
