- Surprised our science buffs haven't spoken about this yet.

Looks as though it's started well so far today.

Look in nuggets, it's been discussed in a couple of threads for months.

I not only have a new crowbar, I stocked extras. One at work, one in the car, one at home...

Crowbar? I want a Manipulator!

Bah, you have to EARN your manipulator.

Now, where's the closest 9mm?

Actually we're already dead due to a mini black hole forming.

Since time is distorted this close we'll never know, during our lifetimes, that we're a doomed world.

Currently the LHC is not running at the energy levels that would produce the kind of phenomena that have been over-bloated in the media (fear sells).

The LHC will start doing long runs of collisions in a few weeks. Mostly to help the teams calibrate their instruments and to get a feel for the machine. The maximum energy levels will be around 5 TEV.

The LHC will be powered down for the winter and the magnet team will "condition" the magnets to bring them up to the 7 TEV level.

In the spring the LHC will be powered up again and this time they will be able to perform collision runs at the 7 TEV level. i.e. - each beam has 7 TEV of energy around the ring, when the beams are crossed with the help of enormous magnets the energy at the cross hair will be 14-15 TEV.

If you believe in the media hype you should start worrying about becoming spaghetti when they start the collisions at 7 TEV.

For now the machine is up and running bringing a close to the design and construction phase that has literally been in process for a generation.

Cheers,

Hmm, was not sure if this thread would be about the collider or another take on Sarah (I can be whatever you want me to be) Palin.

The science being applied is fantastic, but I guess I am one of the skeptics that wonders if the project will deliver sufficient discovery to warrant the expense.

I'd say a few billion's worth it, if they find the Higgs boson.

My students were getting panicky about the end of the world, and I had to point out to them that the math is so far beyond any of us (myself and my class, I certainly wouldn't want to disparage any of the geniuses here) that there was no ground to get concerned. I highly doubt the reporters spreading rumors are qualified either. I understand a small group of scientists, probably qualified, are concerned - but still, I doubt I can even understand the math between their arguments.

Still, anyone have an extra HEV suit?

when the beams are crossed

OK now i'm worried! Did we not learn anything from the GhostBusters?

Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad?"
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

That's what I learned....and the really sad part is, I remember Egon's line with perfect clairity after not seeing that movie for more than 10 years....

I saw a day or two ago that they are going to be working on Ghostbusters 3.

My bad, didn't see it in Nuggets (who goes to Nuggets anyway? Just ho-bo's!!!).

Still, fascinating stuff.

I saw a day or two ago that they are going to be working on Ghostbusters 3.Do they all fight ghosts from a retirement home? Or new cast? Not that Murrey and crew are that old, but they certainly aren't young action heros any more.

Don't know, saw the headline on Yahoo!

This could get actually quite scary and disgusting, with Murray grabbing some ghost "slime" to help aid Sigourney with her "lubrication" needs. I know, I apologize.

I heard that everyone but Rick Moranis is on board.

Rick apparently doesn't need the money, and is retired. Looks like those "Honey We Shrunk/Blew Up the Kids/Ourselves/Baby" movies really paid off...!

Oh my god, I was *just* thinking how cool a Ghostbusters 3 would be about two days ago! That's some freaky sh1t right there mate.
