What's the deal on these "reputation points?"
People click it to "approve" your post?
Sort of like a recommendation thingy-majigy?

If so, the Anti-Americans have a severe disadvantage :P

Basically, if someone clicks approve, you get points and if they click disapprove, you lose points. Several factors influence how many points a given user takes or gives when they do that, but that's the gist of it.

And accumalating points does.. anything?
Present you with a pint of Harvey's Sussex, perhaps?

Sanchek

Changes your reputation icon, based on how many you've got. They get red when you're negative. It's neat.

I think this thread was worthy of increasing Halo's reputation.

Other than identifying the good and bad posters, it's also good for sending a quick note to someone with a comment about their post, without having to go to all the trouble of sending a PM. Just keep in mind that if you want them to see who it's from, you need to include your name in the comment.

Pretty cool.

And I agree. Mucho reputation points to Big Halo from England.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long it takes for someone to get their panties in a wad over this feature and push to get it disabled?

Sunmoon disabled the reputation feature on The Ranger's Glade because people started to misuse it...

Concerning Marz's sig, At first glance I thought it was the Full Contact Fighter logo. If any of you follow MMA (mixed martial arts) or NHB (no holds barred) sports you probably thought the same thing... :) Now if i could only figure out a way to make a sig similar to that for moi.....

I will have a better sig soon enough. ;)

Is there any way to get rid of the point system's anonymity? That would probably cut down on the abuse. ;p

Sanchek

Don't worry. I'm sure it'll be red soon.

Sanchek

The worst is when people give you negative and don't even have the guts to at least leave you a comment saying why.

Roliel
07-02-2004, 07:07 PM
Sanchek, is there a way to get rid of the anonymity that the system allows for?

Sanchek

There is, but I don't know if it's a good idea.

Roliel
07-02-2004, 07:18 PM
Is there any sort of limit on how often someone's allowed to vote on someone's reputation?

Sanchek
07-02-2004, 07:20 PM
Yeah

Buyza
07-02-2004, 08:21 PM
Why is it a bad idea? So I can not see who has left me 10 bad rep points? Lol. Most did not even leave comments, especially names.

Kivorn
07-02-2004, 08:27 PM
For one, so that this place doesn't turn into a warzone with reputation points as the ammo & bandaids.

Roliel
07-02-2004, 08:40 PM
I dunno, I guess I don't really see a purpose for the system at all. I mean, are we supposed to go look at someone's reputation points, and decide how seriously we take their opinion because of it? /shrug. The system just seems like another outlet for potential abuse, nothing else. All you need is a vocal 2% of the boards to have their fun with the system and, in my eyes, it loses any credibility it has whatsoever.

Buyza
07-02-2004, 08:42 PM
Yet it induces people to be anonymous trolls, kivorn. I always thought you disliked that :)

Sanchek
07-02-2004, 08:45 PM
The people who would abuse it won't care if you can see their names or not.

On the other hand, there's other factors to how it works. Like, you have to rep quite a few people before you can rep the same one again (+ or -), and the higher your rep, postcount, and length of membership; the higher your reps count.

Bowler
07-02-2004, 08:54 PM
Ive been able to rep almost everyone on the board so far and Im starting over.

Sanchek
07-02-2004, 08:55 PM
Until you get better rep yourself, your reps are only comments. No points either way.

Bowler
07-02-2004, 09:03 PM
Well that makes it boring. This rep system is a joke. We all know who we hate and who we dont. This board is a war zone.

Sanchek
07-02-2004, 09:04 PM
It lets the non-vocals get involved. Of course it's a joke to you, seeing as how you're already below 0. :p

Kivorn

Eventually we will all fall below zero and then no one will be able to use it. If we dont then people arent using it and its a waste either way.

Kivorn,

I understand what you're trying to do, but if you want this place to be a more mature environment, you're throwing out the baby with the bathwater. You're so adamantly opposed to letting this place turn into a 'playground,' yet such a system has been implemented that allows people with a malicious sense of humor throw poop at whoever they disagree with. It's just another way to let superficial dick-measuring creep its way onto the boards.

I think the system in general is a bad idea, but in order for this system to work, you need to remove the anonymous element. You could either make it so anyone who gets a reputation point given or taken from them see who did the giving or taking, or let only the mods see how reputation points are being assigned, and put someone in charge of monitoring how reputation points are being assigned.

Kivorn

The reputation system is inherent in the vbulletin software, so this isn't "my" plan per se. Like with most things it's subject to change. If it doesn't work, it'll get removed. I just find it to be a shame if it would have to come to that since it's a pretty spiffy system, and it'd be great if it worked out.The system has several failsafes built in to prevent abuse. One of them being the fact that you can't give someone else reputation, positive or negative, if your reputation is negative in itself. Something Bowler obviously experiences right now. Another failsafe is that you're capped in how much you can boost another individual.

The anonymous element is currently under discussion. Either it stays, or it doesn't, but for now I know Sanchek's hellbent on forcing people to submit a comment if you give someone else rep.

The mods and admins can already see how the reputation points are being assigned, by detail. If we find people abusing it we can simply put them at a negative value manually, and thus prevent them from abusing the system further. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Roliel

I agree with forcing people to comment, but I think it'd work better in theory than in practice. I mean, if you guys put in some sort of character requirement, I could just say 'kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.' I guess you could add the option for people to flag a comment for review, but that sounds like a pain in the ass to me. I still think it's just another way for people to compare the length and girth of their manhood, though.

Rybit

I'll look into making a comment required.

Aside from participation in this stupid system what bearing does the Reputation Point level of a poster have?

Bowler
07-03-2004, 12:00 AM
The set up is vague but people with a high post rating get special posting/board benefits.

Talid
07-03-2004, 12:03 AM
If that is true, then I want that system removed. Giving people special benefits because a majority of people agree with what they have to say is beyond retarded.

You'll see people like Halo and Lleauric, while both logical and somewhat intelligent people who post a lot, get bashed to shit because they don't agree with the Republican Army that is the RLNag forum.

Buyza
07-03-2004, 12:13 AM
Yah I agree with talid on that point, just because I already have -10 points or w/e does not mean I should be subject to racial slur reputation comments or uncapable of accessing certain abilities.
