Rift head start opens up about 14 days from now if you've pre-ordered.
If you're looking for a guild and somehow remember me not being annoyed by you (pro-tip: you annoyed me) feel free to contact me. A couple of us from FoH are going to form a guild on Defiant PvP (server to be announced when they provide a list).
Can contact me on the FoH forums as Zehn - Vhex, in IRC as Vhex (irc.uberguilds.org:6668 #fires) or via E-mail (vhex@oxygenz.net).

Ok... so... I have to say, last night was one of the funnest experiences I've had in an MMO since I was in a good raiding group in WoW. The way they have made Rifts / Events work is amazing.
After I got to level 9 or so, I decided to go out and try some Rifts. There weren't many opening up at the time, so I had to do a lot of running. The Rifts were a blast, but after I hit one where the mobs were too high level for me to hit, I decided to level a bit more.
Around 11PM, when I was level 13 all hell broke loose in the zone I was in. Rifts opened everywhere. Attacks came from everywhere. I opened up the map and the entire northern part of the zone was flashing. I joined up with a raid group and pretty much killed non-stop for 2 hours. By the end of the night my wrists hurt and I was exhausted, but we had cleared every single Rift / Attack. Quite the feeling of accomplishment.. as was going to the Rare Planar vendor and buying some nice new gear.
I still am unsure about how long the novelty will last and how interesting it will be after it wears off... but I was pretty sold on the game last night. It plays almost exactly like WoW... so much so that pretty much anything that you did in WoW, from emotes to pet commands, are going to be exactly the same.

The zonewide invasions are pretty awesome. The problem I have thus far is that when there are rifts, they turn into complete clusterfucks if there's a lot of people around. It's hard to get anything out of the events when there's 30-40 people sitting in the same tiny space. That said, I'm glad that rifts work as well as they do, they're a major improvement over warhammer's public quests, which is what I usually end up comparing them to.
Have you tried the first dungeon for either faction yet? I've done the one on Guardian side (Realm of the Fae) and it was pretty sweet. Good pacing, challenging boss fights (for the most part), trash that requires different strategies, etc. Plus, at least the first time anyway, it automatically puts you on a quest when you zone in so everyone got something rather than those who happened to hit the RNG particularly well.

I didn't get a chance to play the whole beta (snowboarding the best snow I've ever seen at Mammoth won out) but I made it to level 17 last night on my BM / Para / Riftblade. I promptly pre-ordered the game with a three month sub. It may end up like the previous 10 or so MMO's I've tried out, with me quitting after a couple months, but hell.. it was fun, why not?

Those from Prism who are going to play are going to be on Belmont which looks like a PvE server. Look for the guild "Alliance of the Griffin".
I'm not gonna fall for the tricks played on me by the makers of Warhammer, Shadowbane, and Vanguard ... I'll wait a few months to see if the player base stays before investing.

I received tons of beta invites for this game for their weekend event things and that sort of turned me off to the game but never had time to check it out. There's a huge following for it on eq2flames b/c allot of the dev team came from eq2 and most eq2'ers liked Scott Hartsman. He even posts allot on the eq2flames/riftflames forums.
But... I'm still undecided about the game I'm hearing people in the beta have gotten burned out quickly but some think it's the second coming. I'm cautious these days b/c I've listened to the hype and been disappointed. I might try it but I'm going to wait a while first and see if it fizzles.

Beta tested this....it's a solid game. Experienced few issues (other than lag). Graphics are great. I really like the multi-soul customization. But as far as game play goes, it's really just WoW 2.0 /shrug. I mean, for the most part you're lead around by the nose. PvP is faction vs faction, nothing new there. The Rifts that show up are a rework of the public quest system from Warhammer (a great feature, but nothing really new). It's a rework of past works, but it does it very well.
After experiencing the open freedom and limitless possibilities of EvE Online, I personally find it very hard to go back to another WoW clone. But someone who is into WoW will love this game.
Cloudwalker21
02-28-2011, 07:46 AM
Agreed Binuven - it is WoW 2.0. I think the difference in mindset I have about it is that Trion stated that they weren't trying to cut new gameplay into their game. At least, I think they said that. Instead, they were going for taking what is already sort of working (PQ's from warhammer) and what works well (class systems) and making it better. The instances I've done (all 3 of them, which hopefully isn't many of them), have had good pacing, challenging boss fights, and great atmosphere.
That said, I HATE quest systems. Maybe I'm just an egotistical bastard, but I don't need the game telling me to go over there and look at that rock. I should be able to decide for myself that I give a shit about that rock covered in eldritch runes, not have a quest tell me that I do.

This game feels more like a mix between EQ1 & WoW... Most EQ like modernized game I have found and I am in love!
My Bard is level 13(yes I said BARD!) and my Marksman is level 17 (yes I know I could have both with one character and role switching but I have to play one with a certain friend and the other when said friend is not online)
I love this game!!!

They did say they were not trying to make anything game breaking. That said the UI feels like wow. The gameplay itself is comparable but I wouldn't say it's copy and paste by any means. I am not a huge fan of quest lvling either but having done dungeons and some warfronts I can say lvling through those with minimal questing can be very viable.
I am quite enjoying it and if endgame works out we will migrate there completely. Our roster is filling out nicely with old cestus members with leadership from Apostate, Nend, Roo and myself(still Laorne in rift) :) If any of the crew who xferred over to Cestus Dei still read here and are interested in playing with us feel free to whisper any of the leadership for an invite :) The server again is Shadefallen - Defiant side

I caved and bought it after numerous emails and txts from friends saying how much fun it was.
I had fun last night. Fortunately our server isn't OMGWTF full; but I still had to fight for mobs for quests. It's different but the same. I think the game is gorgeous and I spent allot of time just looking at things in the env, the character creator, and tweaking my graphics.
It's also surpsigingly smooth even in large groups of people the FPS didn't drop noticeably. My only gripe would be that there's allot of browns/dark colors in the scapes. At least the starting area I was in....once I got to Freemarch (sp?) it was a little better but still not as vibrant and colorful as WOW.
The UI reminds me of WOW. The env and character models remind of both EQ2 and LOTRO. Obviously the rifts remind me of WAR. Shinies on the ground = EQ2. Death reminds me of EQ2, WAR, and LOTRO combined. So there's elements from allot of games and they come together nicely; it's like playing these games in a new setting but almost like you've played it before b/c it seems familiar.
It's definitely something I can see me playing for now. B/C after 4 level 85s in WOW and almost a 5th since cata. I'm pretty bored; nothing feels new there and I'm already tired of raiding the same zones each week.
The soul tree definitely intrigued me last night. I respeced probably 5 or 6 times just seeing how things changed. This feature alone will keep me entertained for some time http://eq2flames.com/images/smilies/smiley-happy.gif I really like attaining my spells/skills thru the tree and my choices and not just ding, new spell, go train.
Bottom line = fun. I cancelled my WOW sub after one night of playing.

I'm still having fun. Made level 30 last night.
Couple concerns: Zone events aren't fun if there is only a small group of people in the zone (happened to me last night). Also, I'm level 30 in under a week, and that's with having not played Thursday and working Monday / Tuesday. At this rate I'll be 50 by the end of the weekend. I sure hope the end game content is there to keep me interested.
Cloudwalker21
03-03-2011, 08:53 AM
Agreed Akom. We're leveling at a pretty brisk clip, but the dungeons so far are awesome. My understanding is that at 50, there'll be 'heroic' versions of all the old dungeons, plus the raid content (I don't remember how many raids). I remember reading that trion is adding in new raid content before too long too.

03-03-2011, 10:44 AM
Opening weekend they brought up 5 or 6 new servers. I don't know what the story is now, but I haven't had a problem with a queue since then. Also apparently people would set up autorun mechanics (like something heavy on the W key) to avoid getting idle kicked originally. This has been addressed somehow as well, or so I've been told.
fildien
03-03-2011, 11:20 AM
I haven't experienced any queues and I'm on a medium to heavy server. The original ones from the headstart though are a different matter. I'm having a blast though, I made a bard and think I found a combo I want to stick with. So much fun!

03-03-2011, 12:46 PM
Bards in this game are awesome. They do decent damage and have an insane amount of buffs. They also can be a great secondary healer, which has been awesome for our group because we don't need two healers all the time, but on some of the more intense fights having the extra healing a bard provides is incredibly useful.

A guy that I play with said that he'd read that they are hoping to do small content patches once a month. I don't know if there is any truth in that, however.

Yeah, I am. Done the first two bosses in Greenscale. Still gearing up, still having fun.. but I do still fear for the end game. I am not a hard core raider anymore. It seems like the only real draw at 50 is to gear up for raiding. That or doing dailies. I have to admit that I am not doing the rifts much. Done ten or so raid rifts. Those are pretty cool.. but still.. nothing amazing, and it still requires you to be on at "raid time" with your guild. So far that hasn't been too big an issue, but mainly because I haven't been up to a lot socially.
It's cool that they've already had their first content patch. To me, though, it seems like it will suffer the same fate as WoW (for me). I hate the gear treadmill. If the only thing you have to keep you motivated to keep playing at max level is the next level of gear, I'm probably going to bore easily.
They need something like EQ had... Alternate Advancement. Something to make you feel like everything that you're doing is at least worth something.
fildien

I'm still playing as well but very casually. For me the draw of this game is that I don't feel addicted to it and can go days between logins and still feel like I get things done. But, my highest character is only 36 and I have 3 others in their 20s so I'm not at the level cap and not doing any end game stuff otherwise I'd probably feel like Akom.
I like that I am not addicted to this game and sit for hours playing trying to get that quest done or raid boss down before bed. I'm just not up for that kind of gaming anymore. I subbed for 6 months at the 9.99 rate; I felt like it was a good deal and I'm sure I'll get my money's worth. Some of my friends are already back in WOW but they all decided to roll new characters on completely different servers. I'm not wired that way, if I go back to WOW I'll feel the tug to raid hardcore again and I refuse to let myself fall prey to that again.
I think Rift will continue to improve so I'm giving them 6 months. If not, by then I hope something else is out that I'll enjoy.

Still playing here. Running expert dungeons now (t1's anyways). The guild I'm in has downed the first boss in GSB, supposed to try infiltrator last night but I didn't stick around. I'm enjoying the gear up, and looking forward to the new content. The experts are a genuine challenge (at least for now, mispulling in any fashion will wipe us).
That said, I think the game has some balancing issues to address. In particular, melee in this game seems like a handicap if you're not a tank. Most of the bosses we've done so far have a fight mechanic that makes melee a detriment at best (mobile boss fights), and an absolute impediment at worst (constant AE damage).

I typically don't even blink an eye at MMO's anymore since most of them end up not even coming close to capturing me like EQ did, or just flat out failing all together (Vanguard, Horizons, DAoC etc etc) - (and yes, I'm still playing EQ).

I have a character on Rocklift - same name. No time to really play, but checking out the game, agree with the observation that it is not very original, but pulls best of the best elements of a lot of games. I can't see this as a Warcraft killer, although it is "time" for Warcraft; old game. :)

Hit lvl 35 this morning. Not too shabby in a week!
I must say, there are some aspects of this game that i really like. I like the open-ended class system A LOT. I like the way they did the public grouping. Really nice ideas - I don't know anything about the high-end game, obviously. Nor do I have any idea about the longevity of the game. However I can say in the past week I've had more fun soloing through the group content and exploring, than I've had in EQ in years.
I started as a melee class, but i deleted him shortly after and rolled a caster. I was a warlock/necro for quite a while (I didn't know how to get additional souls), however I then added pyro to my spec, and I have focus'd on pyro pretty much since then. A necro/warlock with DD's = nasty!
Playing on Ashstone, and enjoying it thus far. Even if I end up only getting 6 months of enjoyment out of it, it's been money well spent to me already.

A level 13 the ability to get more souls opens up. And you can purchase "roles" from your class trainer so you can run around with multiple "specs". Like on my cleric I have a DPS, healing, and tanking spec. I love that I can switch them on the fly :)
Immortalis

Yeah I have my main solo/dps spec of warlock/necro/pyro, however I also have necro/chloro/dominator spec so I can heal and do some CC while still off-tanking with pet and adding dmg with DoT's.

For Fildien: I've hit endgame at this point. We're actively raiding Greenscale's Blight and River of Souls 2 days a week. At this stage, I've basically gotten every single upgrade out of the expert dungeons that I want, minus one serious upgrade (trinket) and two barely noticeable upgrades. As a result, most of my time is spent goofing around, or running things that benefit the rest of the group. I don't mind this, but I feel less attached to running dungeons now.
The game is still enjoyable to me, but it's shifted from a personal level of enjoyment to a group level. Most of the fun I have now is on the raids. I guess I could try making an alt, but I'm not sure how I feel about that. It is hard for me to break away from the character I first started usually.
Also, Immort - tanking is a lot of fun in this game. Not anything like a warrior tank in EQ, but that's not really a bad thing I think. Raid tanking is enjoyable, group tanking is enjoyable (most of the time). The nuance of tanking spec choices you can make are pretty sweet. Out of the 4 role slots I have, 3 are filled with tank specs that apply to different situations.

Agreed Akom. Right now, DPS as a duel-wielding warrior is just not as good as one using a 2 hander (or so I've found). A comparable spec made with deeper paragon with the same 3rd tree, because champ and para tend to go together, has the deeper champion spec coming out on top. It's frustrating, because I like the idea of DW more than a 2 hander.

I stick with it. They upgraded my RoS 1h yesterday (34 DPS!) so I'm playing with that. I pulled 1700 DPS on a pack in CC the other day.. was pretty proud of that ; )

Hmm. What's your spec? I usually roll with 12 para/30 champ/24 BM, and that (so far) is the best DPS I can pull.

30 Para, 30 RB, 6 Champ at the moment. Going to experiment with 51 RB today.
Did an IT to help a friend get some gear last night. Another geared warrior came with. He was 2h and I was DW and we had nearly identical DPS. But he was Champ / RB so that shouldn't be too surprising. I out damaged him by quite a bit on groups of 5+ that died quickly. Did over 1700 on one group. Usually my AOE is 1100 - 1400 though and single is 600 - 700 for dungeons, 700 - 800 for raids.
And no pet to manage ; p
To me, playing the way I want is way more important than 50-100 DPS. If I was lacking 500 DPS or something, that would be different.
Para / RB (or champ / rb) is a lot of fun. You feel more like a rogue. All of the bursts are off GCD, so every time you get 3 ability points, you can use them instantly. Pretty easy to macro too. Not sure how you feel about macros, but it makes life so easy when you have 6+ abilities to manage. Now I just use one macro for my regular attacks / followups, and another for ability points. It makes watching and hitting at 3 ability points a breeze, which is important since there are so many involved fights in Rift. I totally get people who don't like macros, but it's the only way to stay competitive as melee DPS IMO.

I'm really missing being a tank. Overall im really disappointed in the Pyro spec, outside of pvp (in which, im a paper bag but at least i can crit ppl to hell).
I've switched to SC/Ele/Archon for my main dps spec for dungeons/raids.... wow. I can crank out over 2k dps on packs now, where before id be lucky if I broke 1k.
This doesnt mean i love being a caster now... it just means im hating it a lil less :P

As far as I'm aware, heavy SC builds are the best DPS for a mage at the moment. There's still time to make a warrior though! The VK changes from 1.2 are pretty sweet, to the point where it's the first time I've ever done a 51 point build at all. Accord of Emptiness is pretty awesome, as is spellbreaker and rift summon.

After a long break from all games I picked this back up and started new on a different server (Rocklift) and faction. I'm enjoying the game even more and am happy to see some things integrated that I felt should have been there all along...LFG system for one.
Really enjoying it again and looking forward to the free characters so I can move my old characters to the server I'm on now. Anyone else still playing?

I heard this game is too easy and becomes redundant. Any truth to that?

You can't really call one game redundant after playing Everquest. THAT was redundant.
That being said, its awfully easy from what I can tell too - much like WoW which it modeled after.

Easy? If you mean levelling then yeah I'd say that's pretty easy, but so is every game these days. If you mean dungeons and raids then I'd say no. The dungeons are long and involved and remind me much more of EQ1 than anything else I've played.
The only thing that seems like WOW to me is the UI.

You aren't playing the same Rift as the rest of us if you think the UI is the only similarity :)

Easy? Compared to original EQ, hell yes but what game these days isn't? And that's just in regards to leveling really - and I guess maybe tradeskills if you do them as you level.
However once you hit 50, the game pretty much changes. You dont find yourself solo grinding redundant quests for xp anymore etc.
I love doing dungeons in Rift, and I am also enjoying some pvp work (over halfway thru p5 to 6 now). There's quite a few aspects that I just find "fun". Various events, and 10-man raids etc.

Still enjoying Rift here. However I do feel they nerfed the experts to much in order to implement the LFD. I guess it's a plus the 2nd time around as my main toon was already geared when this was implemented. Raids are pretty fun thus far with a nice challenge.
It will be interesting how they keep the more casual players around once they finish with experts etc....There is still a large crown who like in EQ didn't really raid much just enjoyed grouping and progressing their character through advanced abilities.
I think an alternative character progression system is needed with only having 4 callings in the game. With the ease of lvling it really wouldn't be hard to max out 4 toons and be left with nothing to do. I would love to have a reason to run dungeons/kill crap outside of raids on my main but i can only do so much daily grinding that gets boring with no real gain other than money.

This is why I'm limiting my online purchases with an actual credit card. Game time cards for now on with companies. There have been too many of these breeches in the last year.
