View Full Version : Rock Band II Ion drums
I want to get this for my *kids* for Christmas......
Looks really cool.
Anyone (fadorn) have any input on this? Ideas, concerns?
It costs around 300 bucks and will take up some space which is my main concern... But I hear you can play them like the electric drums.... which sounds like FUN !!!!

Oh and I wanted to share this with you because I thought it was a very thoughtful thing to do.... After my Middle son wrote his letter to Santa, I pulled it out the mail box and read it (of course).... He asked for 2 things ( a couple of games ) then the rest of his letter was for his brothers.
My youngest son had already sent his letter to Santa but forgot a few things so my middle son asked for the things that my youngest forget explaining that the letter was already sent.
My oldest son apparently does not believe in Santa so he didn't write a letter... so my middle son explained to Santa that his older brother wasn't writing this year and went on to give some ideas on what he might want and to please not forget him.
I thought that was really nice of him.
He never showed me or my wife the letter before mailing so it was a real glimpse into his heart :)

My understanding is that yes you can play them as electric drums but that you need some sort of adapter to do so that costs like another $150 but I am not sure and could totally be wrong. I have RB2 but still use the older drums :D

That's awesome. Sounds like you have a great kid there.
As far as the game, I just have Guitar Hero versions, but I have heard of issues with the drum kits not properly receiving each hit. I played with a 'band' at best buy this week on guitar hero world tour, and the drum kit repeatedly didn't register hits from the guy playing it.

I used to have this problem in RB1 but not in RB2. RB2 has much better calibration built into the game and before you play you should calibrate them. Just pulling it out of the box you'll probably have issues. Some TVs have slower/faster refreshes so it's definitely possible to have timing issues. Again however, calibration rememdies this. :D
I went ahead and bought the ion drum set. It is kind of heavy in the box. I wont open it until Christmas morning with the kids. They said I could buy a speaker to play it solo.
I also got Gears of War 2 and the Call of Duty :)
The Drums are pretty cool. Yes you can play them independent from the game on a certain setting. (the game is on but you can flail away).
I have found out I am terrible on the drums...... I never would have figured that!

I have played RB2 the most in the past 3 days than I have in a long long time. It's definitely a fun game :) I still have the RB1 drums but my nephew has the new ones. And yes you're right you can play free style in RB2. I'm getting better surprisingly I've moved up to medium! /rawr. I can't sing worth a flip though.
