View Full Version : Rove Resigns

Rove has resigned from the administration, citing a desire to spend more time with his family in Texas.
So, will he now be forced to answer questions when subpoenaed by the committee(s) investigating Bush and Cheney?
Will Bush put out another quick Presidential Order protecting former government officials and aides from having to divulge information that would have been protected in their previous positions?
Will Rove suffer an accident on his trip home?
Will "the Architect" now seek out a new bumpkin to mold into a phony caricature of a politician?
Well, what will happen next in the saga of "As Bush Co Turns"?

Spending "more time with one's family" is typically a euphemism for "become politically untenable to hang around." Still, Rove's been a very busy boy over the past decade, Bush won't be running for office again, and I recall Rove saying a couple years ago that he didn't plan on continuing in politics once Bush's presidency comes to an end.
Now is a good time for him to make mint through speaking engagements and perhaps write a book, pre-empting those who would paint an unpleasant picture of his role in the Bush White House.
He'll continue to defy Congressional subpoenas, comfortable in the knowledge that Gonzales won't pursue action against him.

Par for the course, you mean?

Many political cartoonists applied the same thing following his resignation. Time will tell if they could have thrown in RNC HQ as well.

I like the brain jumping out of the head theme.
This thread should be much longer, more interesting. Are we all just waiting and holding our breaths? Or no real info? Or is this a duh moment - yeah he's gone, we're happy, and there's nothing else to say?

Or is this a duh moment - yeah he's gone, we're happy, and there's nothing else to say?Maybe it's just scandal burnout, but while Rove may be out of the WH at the end of the month, Congress is examining what he was up to the past 6 years. A couple (http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/19034.html) articles (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/18/AR2007081801182.html) on possible Hatch Act violations to keep you up to date. From the latter:In the past few months, revelations about a few dozen political briefings that Rove's team conducted at federal agencies and several election-related slides from those briefings have touched off investigations into whether the White House improperly politicized federal workers or misused government assets to win elections.Investigators, however, said the scale of Rove's effort is far broader than previously revealed; they say that Rove's team gave more than 100 such briefings during the seven years of the Bush administration. The political sessions touched nearly all of the Cabinet departments and a handful of smaller agencies that often had major roles in providing grants, such as the White House office of drug policy and the State Department's Agency for International Development.

How much knowledge did Karl have of the pending resignation of Gonzales, do you suppose? Now that Gonzales has removed himself from the equation, in terms of blocking legal pursuits, will both be subject to more scrutiny that they will no longer have the wherewithal to avoid?

I work in a law office. A lawyer came in today, and he and I were talking. Here's exactly what he said to me, "The rats are jumping off the ship."

Why not.. experience and capability do not seem to be criteria for hiring in the Bush White House.

Now that Gonzales has removed himself from the equation, in terms of blocking legal pursuits, will both be subject to more scrutiny that they will no longer have the wherewithal to avoid?I imagine Rove knew very well that Gonzales was going to resign. Gonzo's imminent departure was brought up yesterday in the Times, but I didn't believe it. It's rare for even moderate profile officials to resign on a day other than Friday, much less Monday, but out he goes.
I expect Congress to continue looking into Rove and Gonzo's activities (and possible citations of contempt for Rove), and I expect there to be continued stonewalling by the White House. Hard to predict if it will ultimately go anywhere, though I think there's plenty of justification for continuing with discovery and proceedings.
So what next? Chertoff is heavily rumored as the next nominee -- even, perhaps, as a recess appointment (Bush is certainly petulant enough to go that route as a jab at Congress). Solicitor General Paul Clement is apparently Bush's pick for acting AG. It'll be interesting to see who fills the deputy levels in the AG's office, too; most of the others (McNulty, Sampson, Goodling, etc.) already resigned earlier in the year.

My fear is that now we'll never actually know the truth behind many of the things that have gone on in the Bush administration.
Chertoff, good grief. The same guy who claimed he gained his info about New Orleans from his local newspaper?

Did you ever think we would? I know we will never know...they are going to leave the white house smelling like roses. If there is anything that might show they stink it will be buried in some basement for the next 200 years and then become public record when no one can be touched. lol
