We haven't discussed the trial much on these boards. From reading comments in this article (it's from a news outlet so take it as you will), it looks like to me Saddam is getting some mighty strong preferential treatment from the judge.

What are the possibilities, if any, that Saddam could be freed? If this were to happen what would be our recourse and how do people think the Iraqi's would react to it? Are we still having this insurgency in such a manner because they are still afraid of Saddam returning to power?

I can certainly see Iraqis that were under his iron fist being afraid of the railroad job of a trial they are trying to conduct in Iraq. It sounds like to me that the judge could be a Baathist. Should we investigate into that, or has that already been done?

I doubt Saddam would long survive freedom, at least while in Iraq. As I recall, some of his lawyers haven't fared very well.

Yeah, I think he'd be dead as soon as he walked out of the court room. Unless he could muster up some of his old cohorts to act as human shields.

Which trial is this judge overseeing? Saddam is currently in two... the latest just started a week or two ago.

He's overseeing the latest. I'm aware he could still receive the death penalty in the first trial. It just really bothers me that Saddam seems to have a judge biased against the prosecution in the current case.

The first trial survived a judge change... perhaps this one will as well.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The new chief judge in the Saddam Hussein genocide trial threw the former Iraqi president out of court Wednesday, and his lawyers stormed out in protest. A leading human rights group charged that the government's decision to replace the former chief judge, Abdullah al-Amiri, threatens the independence of the troubled tribunal.

Yeah, I first read about this yesterday when the board was down(at least for me) and forgot to post something about it in this thread. Glad they got rid of him.
