There was a 7yr old kid bitten by a shark Friday, July 2nd and the officials of Baldwin County didn't say anything about it till Sunday, July 4th. How messed up it that crap.

The kid was wading in water up to his waist, with his grandpa, seashell hunting and was bumped on his leg by something. He thought it was his brother so teased him with his foot then saw the shark's fin in the surf. Just as he realized it was a shark it bit into his and shook then started pulling on him. The staff at the Baldwin County Regenal Hospital gave him the nickname 'Shark bait'. He's the only one in his town to have survived a shark attack.

He's from Ark. and at first said he would probably go in a pool again one day, then said he would like to come back to the Gulf but not go any further then waist deep water, even though he was in waist deep water when he was bitten.

most shark attacks happen in 3 to 4 ft of water glad he surived growing up 20 min from the gulf i`ve had plenty of chances to see sharks in waist deep water less then 30 yards off the beach .

When I was 18 and spending my Spring Break on the white sands of Easter Florida ( Clearwater area) my friends and I were rushed out of the water along with everyone else.

Frenzy of activity as everyone ran down one of those long long piers to see what a fisherman just brought in off the dock.

Was an 8ft+ Hammerhead shark...

Didn't go back in the water the rest of the week. /chuckle

I've never seen a shark at Gulf Shores but i remember a couple years ago watching the news and they had this helicopter over Daulphin Island and shot a guy jet skiing with all kinda of sharks swimming under him. I thought it was cool looking.

Shark attacks are scary shit, and I'm proud to say I survived one.

Last year I was in Kauai, on the east shore, where a river connects to the ocean. On this river is where the Kayak clubs do all their practicing, and theres this one part where a bunch of small squares of carpet are laid along the edge and down into the water, so they can get the huge kayaks into the water without scratching them. Well, right next to that, there is a small tree with a little rope swing, and me and some friends were just fucking around out of boredom and swinging off it. Of course we knew the danger of rivers where they meet the ocean, and how thats prime shark feeding ground, but it was a good couple hundred yards into the river, so we figured it wouldn't be a big deal, and people swam there anyways. Well, apparently, that wasn't the case. Went off the rope swing and stood up in about 3 foot water, and felt something just yank on my ankle, but fortunately for me, it didn't get a very good grip. I screamed some unknown explative at the top of my lungs, and very calmly, slowly, got my ass the fuck out of the water. Looked at my foot and I had small bitemarks on my leg that had barely broken skin, and I wasn't totally positive it was a shark, since it was so far upstream. And I didn't really want to claim that, in case it was like, a crab or something and then I'd just look like a huge pussy for saying shark.

So 5 minutes pass, I go back with the rest of the family, and my older sister comes up and starts frantically telling my family how theres a shark in the water and how we better get out. Apparently, some of the kayak club members were talkin and she heard them say how one of their sons was bit by a baby shark that was living by the carpets a few days earlier. Gotta tell ya, I definitely felt like one hardcore badass. Psh, sharks? Fuck that, sharks don't phase me. I would punch every shark in the face. (For those of you that know Dane Cook.)

So thats my story, bit by a shark and lived to tell about it. Not quite that dramatic, but its good for bragging rights. Assuming I leave the fact that it was a baby shark out of it. And exaggerate the wound size.

Amityville Horror, I think, is the movie about the house.

How messed up it that crap.
It's not messed up at all. This wouldn't be news to anyone if 2 billion news outlets didn't have 17 googlebillionzillion pages of space to fill up.

You? Heck I was the one who brought it up. It's not our faults though, it's the youngins. No respect for their elders or what they went through.

Yes, it was Amity, and it had particular reference because much like the incident here the plot of the story was that the town council knew about shark attacks before the 4th of July but covered them up to keep the beaches open for the 4th.

Then the shark eats a few boats, we get to hear about how "1100 men went into the water"..really good horror movie.

Um, not 2 years ago I was swimming in waist deep water off Daulphin Island =( Another time in the Gulf, there was a 4 ft. shark in the water between me and the shore, but only the people on the beach seemed to care.. at least until I saw it lol. At least I was on a lounge floater! =)

Its a fact for most parts of Fla around this time of year , but almost 90% of the time your swimming in the waters here your within 3 ft of a shark.

Right now in Boca they have Tarpon touriments and they cant get the damn things to the boats most of the time due to the fish getting attacked and ripped to shredds by the sharks.

Also anyone happen to see that footage of the tarpon literally swimming up on the beach to get away from a Hammerhead and the damn thing followed the fish up, grabbed it and got back in the water? That happened about 5-10 mins away from me depending on trafic. Damn Hammer head they filmed at the time was about 15-18 feet long, big bastard. Saw him one day while me and some freinds where fishing in a 15 ft john boat in the bay...when the shark is as big if not bigger than your boat, its time to get the hell out of the water

aye reminds me of my wade-fishing days , we used to walk out to the third sandbar which was around 100 yards out from shore then cast out and walk back to shore to set up the rods , most of the time we were fishing for sharks or tarpon .

was always scary while walking out to see a huge dark shape in the water swim by you hehe and a tail fin peek above the wave .

we always had black tips, hammers and sand sharks mostly biggest i ever saw was around 10 ft but yea we used to see them lots of times like 30 yards off beach , where most peeps swim at hehe

PAYDIRT!

And the news reporter was like, "What happened? Why did the shark attack you? Were you TAUNTING it?" "Yeah, I go into the sea sometimes just to f*ck around with the sharks. I have this thing called a shark rocket and I shoot it at them, and it really annoys them. And then I just wade in the water and they come at me but I'm really good at eluding them. I know this hip move, it's something porpoises use. I pretend I have a bottleneck and I stab them in the gills. It really is effective.

I took a visit to Morro Bay in California a few months back. In the morning I wandered down to the free breakfast room and found the local newspaper. The GIANT headline across the top was:
SHARK ATTACK!!!

So of course being the morbid homo that I am I read the article. It turns out that a seal was attacked and found to have sustained injury but escaped alive. I thought THAT is sensational journalism at its best.

Hammerhead sharks don't get nearly that big Baltyn. 10 feet or so max. Even the great white are rarely seen over 18 feet.

An 18 foot shark is big enough for me thankyouverymuch. If I saw ANYTHING that big in the water I'd freak out.

Sorry Winter but your wrong there.

There are nine types of hammerhead: scalloped hammerheads are among the three species dangerous to humans. The others are the 20-foot-long great hammerhead and the smooth hammerhead.

And they have records of plenty Great Whites over 15 feet

tasar01
07-11-2004, 01:12 PM
ya there are differnt types of hammers the ones around here mostly are in the 12 ft max range , but some of the others do get larger .

as far as greatwhites 20 years ago it was common to see them in the 25 ft range or larger . but due to asian cultures farming of sharks for their fins for awhile there they were almost endangered , now days it is rare to see a great white over 18 to 20 ft , although that info is probly 10 years old maybe they are doing better now . but ya anything half as large as your boat or larger and it`s time to dock hehe .

Winterworg

Well I'll take your word for it about the great hammerhead, the only ones I know about are the scalloped hammers around Hawaii. I'm not sure why when I say even great whites are rarely seen over 18 feet you come back with "and they have records of plenty of great whites over 15 feet." Is there logic there somewhere?

I do know this...most of the time when people go out and see a 10 foot shark lazing in the current underneath their 20 foot tour boat, they come back and tell you about the 18 footer that they had to fight off with their snorkel.

Long lining for halibut in Alaska about 10 years ago we got our groundline tangled around a whale shark. Imagine my surprise. It was at least 800 feet long (translated 30+) and I felt bad for him. We had to cut the line... nothing else we could do. Felt a lot better when I got my 6000 dollars for that day's work.

Side note.. we used to catch Salmon Sharks once in awhile while purse seining. They only get up around 10 feet long but they're really thick and barrel like. We'd see them all the time while we were swimming but never worried about it. A 10 foot salmon shark can be up around 1000 pounds. Big bastards. When we got them in our seine we would get a noose around its tail, lift it up with the single boom. When you have 800 pounds of shark hanging by its tail, with only cartilage, you can cut their tail off with a quick flip of the wrist with a fillet knife. The bonus was that they'd wash up on shore and the bears would come from miles around to chow on them. We did have one on deck one time that caught me in the knee with his tail and knocked me half way across the deck.

When I was a kid I would catch dogfish (mud sharks) in Hood's Canal (Puget Sound.) If you cut the tips of their noses off they can't submerge so they'll just swim around on the surface. The sea gulls come down and peck them to death. The do make good crab bait though.

I did mean over 18 ft winter sorry aboiut that I was in a hurry to leave to go over my fathers house. As for the fighting it off with a snorkel...well there was 2 of us in a 15ft john boat with just a trolling motor, we had planned on checking some crab traps for stone crab and blues and do alittle fishing around some mangrove islands when he decide to come up and check us out. so we got a up close and personal look at him, im just glad the bastard wasn't hungry. 1 REALLY big fish + 15 ft Aluminum = screw the fishing and crabs.

I worked for a comercial grouper fishing captain after i got out of the marines for a bit and any sharks we hooked he would cut their fins off and use the smaller ones on bait for the shark line we would drop at night and hide the fins. I asked him what they were for and he did tell me they sold for a bunch by the pound. Not sure about the rest of the US but you get nailed here with shark fins on your boat and they use you for bait (found this out a week after).

Same trip i got the pleasure of seeing a whale shark also. Not sure of the size or how far down it was, the water at the time was clear and very blue.
