In his statement, Berger said that "when I was informed by the Archives there were documents missing, I immediately returned everything I had, except for a few documents that apparently I had accidentally discarded."

He apparently was seen stuffing classified documents into his pants and his coat, according to some newspaper reports.lolz

There's a completely rational explaination for all of this:

1. Sandy Berger had no reason to steal any documents from the National Archives. He was already a highly praised National Security Advisor under Clinton and he could have, if he so wanted to, stolen these same documents while he was in that role previously.

2. The room was controlled by the best security our country can make and it was under the auspice of national security. Why would Sandy Berger ever jeopardize our country's security to cover his or someone else's ass?

3. The existence of missing documents make these allegations questionable without substantial supporting evidence...which would obviate any need to actually steal any of these documents. Afterall, if they could be stolen, then they weren't that important where they?

Certainly, it *could* all be a mistake of some kind...but this is also a person very familiar with the rules regarding highly classified documents and their handling. That he would make such an egregious error seems...inexplicable.

Obviously, I need to sharpen my sarcasm skills - my intended target didn't even notice...

And I'll need to read more closely, though when I saw "highly praised" amidst the rest of the post I started to wonder if the forums' mysterious hacker hadn't taken over your account.

I don't see the sarcasm. Personally I can't really make a judgment yet, but I guess he forgot his briefcase if he was stuffing documents in his pants.

"Are those classified documents in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?"

You just had to know he'd say that.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed the handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket, pants and socks, and also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio.
Ok ok, putting something in your pocket... or in your jacket...or in your briefcase is forgiveable. "Oops, I fucked up." But your SOCKS?

We need to bring back public hangings.

A. Hasnt even been charged with anything.. If he IS eventually charged will speak volumes, until then, its a political game.
B. Two days before 9/11 commission report due out.

If we want to speculate what was in the missing documents, then lets speculate it was GWB's National Guard records that were thought to have been destroyed in a fire.

That being said, if he is charged with something, then Ill be the first in line to agree that something is afoot. Until he is, all of this is meaningless

Kind of like Kerry's mysterious purple hearts and the records he said he'd release but didn't. His superior officer when interviewed basically said he came in whining with a scratch on his arm requesting that he be awarded a purple heart and I told him to beat it. Somehow he ended up with a purple heart anyway. Not to mention that the action in which he was "injured" was him ordering his boat to open fire on a sampan which he had no idea what was in it or if they were farmers or VC or what, and there was no fire returned at all.

His second purple heart came in a mission in which no one was singled out but that a general reprimand was ordered saying basically that the boat commanders went way overboard in destroying basically undefended sampans, huts, 1000s of pounds of rice, and that in the future better judgment needs to be made and better identification of targets.

None of his purple hearts resulted in being taken off duty or in hospitalization. Of course he won't release the medical records.

I think it's pretty probable he will be charged. If the witnesses are at all credible, he clearly should be charged.

I'm sure he'll be charged (and should be if he did in fact do anything wrong).

Interesting timeline:

National Archive started investigating this in October.
They referred it to the FBI in January. The FBI search Berger's home.
The FBI hasn't interviewed Berger about this.
2 days before the 9/11 report is due out the story breaks.

Maybe they need to do a cavity search.

Interesting timing on the theft of FBI records regarding Kerry's actions in the early 70s too.

Well, I think it obvious that Kerry fabricated his purple hearts in order to solidify his credibility as a Presidential candidate.

then lets speculate it was GWB's National Guard records that were thought to have been destroyed in a fire
Or maybe we should look into every other member of the national guard then too, since they destroy ALL of those records at regular intervals to make room for newer ones.

It's a vast conspiracy I tell ya.

Hillary will back me up, just as soon as she gets done stuffing those classified senate files into her purse...

In the words of Gary Coleman... What you talkin bout Willis?

Never seen that report that is refuted there, although he mostly quotes Kerry himself to try to explain away the questions. However ...

It seems a lot of people he worked with agree. In fact Admiral Zumwalt was specifically disgusted with Kerry for his tendency to kill a great number of non-combatants and said he needed to be "straightjacketed to keep him under control" and that he caused a lot of problems.

There are some sources showing contradictory reports from the same commanders during his service but they were explained by having to do such a flood of paperwork. Anyone who does service in the military I give respect to but I don't mind listening to criticism as well.
