Here's what puzzles me:

The Capitol has no metal detectors, and its officers are not armed. Do they not read up on current events or what?

Do they at least provide their lawmakers with target signs to put on their backs? <jk

Seriously though, does anyone know why the would have such lax secuirty?

Do hope the guard is okay, however. :(

They do have security, but they apparently felt is wasn't nescesary to provide sidearms. I suspect the average "security problem" there is some councilman playing grab-ass with a secretary.

In this case, the security *worked*, just not in the best possible way.

The officer was killed with one gunshot to the chest
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say he's not okay.

Lol. That's a pretty morbid way of putting it. ;)

They updated the story Sanchek....when I read it, right after it happened, it just said he was shot. Sorry to hear he died.

I was just suprised to hear any state or federal governemt building, especially one as high profile as a capital building, didn't have metal detectors or armed guards.

In the article, they say that "either a shotgun or rifle" was used, then immediately after that, they have a witness saying it sounded like a bomb went off. I'd guess it was a shotgun. You would think these guys would have an easier time figuring that out, though; the difference between a blast from a shotgun and a round fired from a rifle is pretty... well... apparent. ;p

It also states that the suspect may have stolen a shotgun prior to the shooting.

That's ok, we'll blame the lifting of the assault weapons ban anyway.

Please not this debate. :( Gun control debates are like ten times worse than gay marriage and the Patriot act combined.

ROFL

Here's what the story was like when I read it Sanchek...

http://www.11alive.com/news/usnews_article.aspx?storyid=52157

An unarmed security guard was shot inside the state Capitol on Monday afternoon by someone who then fled in a vehicle, authorities said.

The victim's condition was not immediately released.

There is nothing to debate, you should always use both hands for the best control.
