I stopped in Target this morning, and passing the games area I glanced over and saw they have brought my favorite Sid Meier game back for the new Windows platforms, with updated graphics and bells and whistles.

The original game sat on my shelf still up until a year or so back, even though it was basically useless once DOS and Windows 3.1/95 became obsolete. It always was fun, and I will most likely go back and pick it up this weekend.

I think the sale price was around $26.99 or something close to that. Seems a good buy for hours of entertainment.

It is pretty bloody good. Not gotten to the revolution stage yet (only had it a few days and precious little hours to play) but it's got a solid longevity element to it, a diverse economy (trading is looking good) and not to mention a million different strategies to adopt. Definately a hark back to the solid gaming-principles of the original.

If you want to play some of those old DOS games, i found this program does the trick.

Played a copy of Archon Ultra on it and it seems to work fine with it.

Might just have to check that out, since I still have some Tomb Raider games in the basement. Not sure if I still have Leisure Suit Larry, tho'. :p

DOSBox also turns out to be useful for running certain old Windows games, since you can install Windows 3.1 on it. (Finding a copy of Windows 3.1 today is left as an exercise for the reader.)

Is Colonization the same or similar to Civilization 1? I enjoyed it but it seemed pretty hard!

Colonization was the precursor I believe for the Civ games, being about the Colonization of the New World. The nations involved were the English, French, Dutch and Spaniards. Plus, the indigenous Indian tribes. You spent your time setting up settlements, developing trade, and eventually engaging in a revolution to secure your liberty.

I went back and bought the game today, since I have a few days off to mess with it; I still see the original elements but also see where they have brought the Civ world into it via upgrading certain aspects. Still nowhere close to being able to give a full report.

I went and rummaged around my basement and came up with both boxes, with Colonization coming out in 1994 (386, 486 or Pentium) and Civilization coming out in 1993 (386/SX, Windows 3.1 or later). Heh, found several games I had forgotten about while looking. Need to do a better job of cleaning those basement closets one of these days.
