Anyone else watch this series. The finale was on the other night and it was pretty incredible. I love HBO, the writing is so damn good that it instils hope that American Culture hasnt sold its soul for the pop bubblegum trash that markets to the lowest common denominator.

Anyway. The finale and the series has had me chewing on some points it made. The series was at its heart an exploration about the connection of life and death and what comes in between.
One of the things that the show seemed to say was that we are all totally alone for the most part. Nobody really knows us. Sometimes, in a strong, lengthy, powerful relationship we can come close to knowing the other person. So much so that even when that person is gone, we still are influenced and effected by that persons personality. But even then, its not that person, its our interpretation of who that person was, at times the idealization or demonization, and rarely, on occasion, remembering that person for who they actually were and really hearing them.
Alot of other discussable issues raised by this series.. anyone have any thoughts?

Bah, so the series is over? I don't get HBO on my chintzy basic cable plan and saw this show for the first time a couple of weeks ago while in Corpus Christi. I found the alienated ex-relationship between the one man and woman quite interesting; it was something very real and unvarnished that you rarely see in the haze of gauzy wish-fulfillment divorce reconciliation fantasies that Hollywood loves to dredge up and feed us. If the rest of the series is that interesting, I'd love to see it.

As far as your last paragraph, I haven't seen much of the show, but I'd agree with your premise wholeheartedly - or as much as we might wish to believe, fantasize, or care for it to be otherwise, as Lily Tomlin puts it, "We're all in this alone"...

Nydia

Ya, it definitly is worth every minute.
On the whole, better than the Sopranos in alot of ways.

Wonderful series. It will be missed. Just when you thought you had seen it all they would come up with something else. The writing and directing was phenominal. It was funny in good and sometimes (more often than not) morbid ways. Was completely entertaining, and engrossed the viewer. I had to watch the final episode again just because. I'll have to go back and rent the first couple seasons though just to refresh my memory.

Everyone else watch the 2 part special which talked with the director/cast about some of their fav scenes and some of the various death scenes? That was a fun look back at past events also.

Don't know if I would say better than the Sopranos, but I would say different. Both had/have me captivated. One of the few shows that I don't tape to watch later, but watch while taping.
