"You only have to walk down any high street in Europe to see the extent of the problems we face with overweight kids. Let's do something about it," EU farm commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said in announcing the program.

Looks like you guys are well on your way!

All joking aside, we eat too much processed food these days, too many prepared meals be it fast food or at home with quick fix meals.

Can someone tell me what equates to 400grams of fruits or veggies? Is that like one apple? I'm not good on measurements.

400 grams is almost a *pound*, fild :), A kilo is 2.2 lbs, so more like three small or two medium-sized apples.

Nydia

In Paraguay there are some pretty huge people too believe it or not. One reason might be because almost everything is deep fried, and despite frequent poverty, food is plentiful.

I think a student of history would spend more time hoping we figure out the solution, since so many industrialized nations have been on the same sad trail that we've blazed on this one (GB being one of the closest at our heels).

One thing I noticed on a graph on that page halo is that the states that tend to vote democrat tend to have a higher index.

'I think a student of history would spend more time hoping we figure out the solution'

- How very Oprah-Winfrey of you.
We merely point out WHY the problems started and then act all superior and judgemental for knowing it!

Higher being better or worse?

Higher being better by the definition of the study, meaning higher education, higher average quality of life, higher life expectancy, higher levels of health.

The index just follows the money.

Whose money does it follow? The ones that keep it privately, or the ones that have it taxed away?

Areas with higher incomes have higher indexes here.

Generally, you'd find the same is true in any country. It's just one of those silly "studies" that comes from the circle-jerking sociology academia.

Generally the "states that tend to vote democrat" have higher population densities, are more diverse, and have a higher rate of education - you see other people and want to help them, and you are smart enough not to vote for George Bush :)

In all seriousness, money and health are very directly related as Sanchek pointed out. If you can afford good health care and nutrition, you aren't eating daily off the McDonalds dollar menu. We know the food isn't good, the draw there is that its cheap.
