Check out this amazing footage of the last shuttle launch from the view point of looking down on one of the solid rocket boosters:

Amazing footage!

Here is a break down of the construction and stats on the solids if you want to find out more about them:

http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/technology/sts-newsref/srb.html

The solids seperate at around 28 miles up - only about a quarter of the way to orbit, but high enough to be out of the majority of earths atmosphere. The solids reach an apogee of about 41 miles before they start their descent.

As the solids descend back into the atmosphere we can see that the solid is still burning residual fuel.

Closer to the cloud tops the solid sprouts a droge shoot then 3 large parachutes. Don't worry about watching the video past the splash down, the solid just rights itself (with some sort of boyancy system no doubt) and awaits recovery.

Each solid has a corresponding recovery ship. Each ship picks up the solid and takes it back to land and utimatley Utah ( i think ) so it can be refurbished and reused for a later shuttle lift off.

Very cool. I was completely amazed that the camera didn't shake, even just a little on takeoff. Impressive.
