I was just listening to Janis Joplin sing Me and Bobby McGhee ,and that line,

"I'd trade all my tomorows for one single yesterday"

Has to be one the coolest line in any song. Its DEEP!

Any others?

No No No the BEST line anywhere is from Buckaroo Banzai.

"No matter where you go, there you are."

Janis Joplin was only as deep as her last bottle of Jack Daniel's :\

I'm not even sure she wrote the lyric, but it's damn cool :) .

Yeah, i never said she was a pillar of society heheh.

Her and Jimmy Hendrix had some definite issues.

She was a good singer though and Jimi, well he was almost godlike. It's a damn shame they threw it all away.

and Jimi, well he was almost godlike

So what did he do to become almost godlike. He was just an average guitar player, a stoner, on acid, and played a hideous rendition of Star Spangled Banner.

You have got to be kidding me. He changed the way the guitar was played. I'm not taling about the tricks and humping it either. Name one blues/rock guitartist that does not rip riffs or technique from him?

She was a good singer though

Oh, i in no way meant to imply she was a bad singer
She is one of my favorite singers.Iown all her music.

As far as Jimmy Hendrix goes, his music isn't the greatest (except foxy lady of course..FOXAY!),but he revolutionized guitar playing.

Kinda like the beetles.(ima get tomatos thrown at me i know).IMO,the beeteles were nothing that great, but they totally revolutionized music .

Technique? His technique was slop. My god look at his THUMB. Riffs? O look, theres Jimi playing more Chuck Berry riffs. The only reason anyone thinks he MADE UP anything is because they didnt bother to check up on HIS influences. Eddie Van Halen "invented" techniques. Jimi Hendricks just copied them from people you dont bother to listen to.

Just like that Jimmy Page dork. Now John Paul Jones on the other hand...

If your reading comprehension is this low its not gonna matter anyway. The point was (im gonna say it nice and loud for you) IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE, THEN YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THEM. Thought that was pretty clear.

Yes he was but he had talent as a Song writer. When you hear his songs done by other artists they are really cool.

Bowler, take a wild guess who was one of Eddie Van Halen's biggest influence. That's right it was Jimi. Yes Jimi's guitar playing was blues influenced, but it's far from copying.
Stevie Ray Vaughn was also hugely influenced by Jimi.
Listen to Voodoo Chile' or Purple Haze. Thats incredible guitar playing.Especially for that time period.

Ever listen to the original version of All Along the Watchtower by Dylan? SUCKS! Nothing like the Sonic perfection that is Jimi's version.

Bowler

When speaking of Van Halen's innovations his influences really dont matter unless he lifted his ideas from them, which he didnt. Innovation is not just rearranging someone elses ideas.

While Im on the subject, Van Halen isnt that great of a player he just did something that changed rock guitar. Thus making himself an influence to pretty much everyone. Once you move past that he is just an average shredder.

Tony Iommi has had more influence over modern music than Jimi did. Compared to players like DiMeola who MADE jazz fusion a reality, Hendrick's "influence" was a joke.

Osgiliath666
11-12-2003, 04:39 AM
yea... ok. We agree to disagree. With out Hendrix modern rock guitar does not exist it the form it does today. At least IMHO.

Selwen Soulgazer

While agree that Toni Iomi was indeed influential(as was all of black Sabbath) he wasnt nearly as influential as Jimi.

Hey! They have the Monkees! You know...they were a major influence on the Beatles.

(Sorry, not an attempt at hijacking, just one of those random thoughts that gets fired off by keywords like "influenced by" and then neatly lodged in the "Output" bin in my brain and had to come out somewhere.)

Selwen Soulgazer
11-12-2003, 06:52 AM
oh and let me add that I am much more a fan of Sabbath than I ever was of Jimi.

Okay and I gotta disagree again. Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath would get the credit for most of the power cord (key of E) based rock that pervaded in the 80s and that carries us today. Assuming you think of rock as bands like Korn and such there is no Hendricks influence but Iommi can be heard on every song.

Hendricks didnt offer much. I will give him credit for "inspiring" people to play guitar but thats about it. Drugs are bad mkay.

BOWLER! YOU MAKE ME MAD! =)

Assuming you think of rock as bands like Korn

Look man! Korn and any nu metal is terrible. I'm just short of 30. For me rock died out somehwere around 93 - 94. Not to say there has not been good music since then. But 95% of what I listen too is pre 93-94. Man I'm still stuck in the 80's Bay area thrash scene. I agree though, Iommi is/was major major influence as well. Ok, i'll give ya this. Hendrix/Iommi made rock music. And I mean that in every way. Of course my favorit pure guitar player is Adrian Legg. That guy make my hands hurt watching him play.

I will agree 110% on this statement. I just assumed when you said "rock of today" you were being more literal.

Randy Rhoads was an amazing guitar player. He was the poster child for the 80's thrash scene. A little flashy but still amazing.

One of the best, most diverse guitar players around right now is Bill Frisell. He can jump from swing to country to thrash all in the same song, write beautiful melodies and is sexy:lol

Why are you suprised Shew? I have never said anything like that before on this board or anything remotely like it. I thought my comment was tasteful if you cant handle it Im sorry.

Its considerably less offensive then that breeder "I fucked XX chicks this weekend I think I have STD" shit you post. Dont turn this into a gay thread cause your a moron and cant figure out a condom kkthx.

BTW I hate Judas Priest and Rob Halford is ugly with a capital UG.

Yngwie Malmsteen

Seriously cheesy. He is everything I hate about 80's shred guitar. In many ways the diametric opposite of Randy Rhodes. Mindless speed, mindless songs, LAMER.

If you want speed and thoughtfulness try Al DiMeola (absolutely FLAWLESS speed picking technique), hell even Steve Vai for that matter.

Although, mentioning Steve Vai, he does crap with a guitar thats just bizarre.

Speaking of Malmsteen. He came to my home town like 2 years ago. He has put on, no shit, like 100 pounds. Tub of guts with a mullet. Fastest guy I ever did saw with that there electric twanger was teh guitarist for the 80 shit band Nitro. I have no idea what his name was but he could sweep chordes so damn fast it was amaizing.

Yea I do to.. I think he gets upset when I still think Jimi is THE best guitarist to ever pluck a string..period. HEHEHEHEH. No one could shape sound the way he did. I cn atually hear the bombs exploding when I hear his version of The Star Spangled Banner.

Hardly anymore than 80% of the posters here on any given day in a subject they know anything at all about. Besides my dad is the win.

and please... shape sound? WTF does that mean? The bombs you are hearing is the damn out of key notes. Im glad it does something for you but it just makes my ears hurt.

THE best guitarist to ever pluck a string
Maybe your favorite but definetly not the best.

Under 50K please

/nod on that one.. The spanish flemanco(sp) guitar shit is amaizing. I'd rather listen to Stevie V. over Clapton even though I did get to see Claptons night of the living blues in Denver a few years ago. incredible night. Also give me Bo Diddly.
