With True Blood now HBOs 3rd most watched series ever (Beating out Sex and the City) I figure the original books have to be pretty damn good and got the first one today. Anyone read any of these?

On an aside, True Blood Season 2 starts Sunday.

I canceled HBO due to my frustration with their episodic offerings disappearing with no explanations. I have heard such good stuff about this series that I ordered the DVD issue of Season 1 (costing me around $35). I may pick up the books if the show hooks me, or you write glowing enough reviews. :D

Of the things HBO still offers:
Trueblood is currently the best thing on HBO, better than Big Love and the number one ladies detective Agency, both of which were good.

The best things are the mini series, like John Adams and Generation Kill. Both of which kicked major arse.

Can't stand In Treatment or East Bound and Down. Don't really like the Concords, but i LOVE Entourage of the half hour items. Hung looks "okay". Boxing 24/7 and the HBO sports items are actually really really good, and I don't even like sports.

Honestly, though, i can't recommend picking them up until they greenlight Game of Thrones. :) Ok, perhaps Boardwalk Empire or Treme will be worth it, but they're untried properties...we all saw what happened with Dave from Cincinati (OMG lame!).

Dave from Cincinati (OMG lame!).

John From Cincinnatti was great, pushing the envelope with some quirky yet interesting characters. All the basic themes of drama were there, from self-discovery to redemption to the ties of family and friendship; the setting of the surfer community and assorted hanger-ons was a wonderful choice, and offered a glimpse into a culture most know nothing about. And it gave us another chance to watch Rebecca DeMornay, fer cryin' out loud!!

John, Deadwood and Carnivale all were building up the characters and moving toward something when they disappeared, leaving those who had become fans without any explanation, only a multitude of what ifs.

I'm not sure I will return to HBO even for 'Thrones'. :(

That's great, but this thread is about a BOOK you illiterate fools :) Thus far the book has dramatically exceeded the show - which there is little surprise, I'd imagine.

Unless there is a huge budget and great directing, that is usually the case. In what way do the books (or book, if you are still on the first) differ from the rest of the vampire offerings out there? Writing style, plot lines, etc?

Well Tara (black girl from the diner and Sookie's best friend) for one isn't in the first book. Also in the show you bounce back and forth between Sookie and her brother, in the book its a first person account from her. Granted she can read thoughts which makes it easy to get all the information you need :)

Its a lot more indepth too. She's not some wide eyed, innocent southern bell virgin like in the HBO series (which is a bit unrealistic if she can read everyone's mind) but was molested by an uncle and that's why she keeps everything close to the chest. But in truth the show has kept pretty true to the book. Its a short book, and they made a full series not 1 movie, so it wasn't that hard for them to do.

OK, I am convinced enough to go find the first book. Thanks.

Checking the local library first, as I always do. Might be a bust there tho', since they still don't have that book I think Sanchek had suggested, "Daemon".

Also, 1/2price.com and Amazon used books/cd's/DVD's are a good way to save money, unless it is something you know ahead of time you plan to keep in your library for a long time.

After being told to stay off my feet for the rest of the week by my friendly doctor, I stopped by the local library on the way home and grabbed the only ones on the shelf, "Definitely Dead" and "Altogether Dead". I realize they are way out of sequence in terms of the narrative, but I read the last Potter book first as well, and still enjoyed the entire series later.

Will share my review after reading.

A lot of people take their books into the bathroom with them... maybe not a huge deal for some, just saying, sometimes it's best just to avoid the used book and buy your own ;)

I am still waiting for the sequel to Daemon! If you're that interested in reading it Byl I'll mail you my copy. I'm just about to make my trip to the used book store and trade all my stuff in. I've gone thru like 10 books since May as I got on a crazy reading kick =\

I do appreciate the offer, but with at least a dozen books on the table waiting for me, getting to Daemon is not that big of an issue. I will most likely just wait for the sequel to be done and have them both available at once. You can get better use at your local trade shop.

As for the Sookie Stackhouse books, I was not really that impressed, and will stick to the HBO series as each season comes out on DVD.

Thank you for offering, hon.

"A Touch Of Dead", by Charlaine Harris. I just picked this up the other day, as I wanted something to read but only in short bursts. This is a group of short stories about the world of Sookie Stackhouse. Have not jumped in yet, but thought I would mention it for folks looking for possible Christmas gifts, or their own reading pleasure.

Okay, this is a great little collection of filler stories; they are written to be what is going on in between the happenings in the books. Anyone who has watched the HBO show should enjoy them, whether they have read the books or not; and, those who have read the books will likely enjoy the short bits of "diversion".

Fairies, witches, and oh yeah, vampires.....fun reading.
