yeah, two thumbs way the heck up. The space drop scene is what the first few minutes of starship troopers should have looked like.
So, you know you've seen Chris Pine before, but where?

Yup. Smokin' Aces.

Saw it last night on an IMAX screen. I loved this movie. The plot had some issues, sure, but the rest of the movie more than made up for it. The acting was great, especially those representing younger versions of the people we know.

I had absolutely no interest in seeing this movie (I was always a 'Flash Gordon' kid, as opposed to a Trekky or Star Wars nut), but I was watching State of Play the other night and the trailer for this really looked enticing. This franchise definately needed an injection of youth.

It is worth it even if you are not a trekky... Within the first 5 minutes I turned to my friend who was watching it with me and whispered "JJ Abrams is a genius!"
He actually injected life into Star Trek and made it appealing to more then its own cult following.

Once you get past the first 25 minutes or so, it turns into a decent movie. Good god, that setup portion as outright painful. WHY DO YOU KILL THE CAR?!?!?!

Without giving away any spoilers, the movie is practically guaranteed to have more interesting sequels than you would normally think to be the case. If Abrams is involved in the sequels as well and they avoid actor turnover for the key roles, the franchise is in good hands.

Oh I like how they worked in Kirk making out with a green chick... It would not be Star Trek without it.

I saw a matinee of it earlier today (yesterday?), so as not to drag my girlfriend to it and bore her to death. In retrospect, she probably would've enjoyed it too. They definitely tried to take it very mainstream.
Also, Harold is completely typecast in my mind.

He's a korean playing a Japanese (japanian? err, what is the noun?). How, exactly did milf boy in american pie and harold typecast him for sulu?

He's typecast as Harold. I half expected him to fly the Enterprise to White Castle at some point.

Because of two movies? So is Keanu forever Ted? Harrison for forever Han (well geek answer is yes), Bruce Willis is forever John McClane?
Then comes the conundrum of is Patrick stewart Piccard or is he Xavier? Sly is Rocky or Rambo?

Keanu is definitely forever Ted to a lot of people (which he didn't help with the "I know Kung Fu" line).

Of course not, he's Indiana Jones.

This movie was amazing! Interesting how they more or less tied in the storyline with everything else using the 'time-travel card,' which would explain more or less any inconsistencies with some traditional canon.
However, the whole time the movie was going on with all the time stuff, I could just see TNG/DS9/VOY disappearing before my eyes into the voids of lost time :/

I liked it. The cast had the mannerisms of the original cast down. Especially bones and Chekov

I just got around to seeing it and the characterizations of the cast were for the most part spot-on (although it's too bad Kumar doesn't have as much sardonic charisma in his whole body as George Takei has in his pinky finger ;) ) - and it was nice to see these beloved characters that have been around since I was a toddler young and vibrant again - you can tell that the film was a labor of love. The plot was, of course, ridiculous (but since when were original Trek episodes about plot) but this was a small annoyance, the only real misstep in my mind being the undignified way in which the romance between Zoe Saldana's RealUhura(tm) and Spock was handled. The characters deserved better, and while I didn't object to the romance per se, it could have and should have been a lot more subtle. And what was up with that *hair*? Couldn't they have let her have a natural?
All in all I think they did a very good job reimagining the franchise and I hope that the sequels (because you know there will be at *least* two) are worthy of the setup they've been given.
Regards,
Nydia

I loved it. Agreed with Nydia about John Cho, but he definitely did a good job with the character's wilder side (sword fight on an orbital drill anyone?). I also really enjoyed Simon Pegg appearing as Scotty, I thought he hit the character pretty well.

My favorite was Bones hehe, he was awesome! Simon Pegg rocked as well! Dammit! Bring on the sequel already!

I just saw this movie....HOLY SHIT I LOVED IT!
I liked the reinvention, and they even gave story arc for why things are different which allows for some hopeful sequals.
My only gripe, Sylar will always be Sylar for me :P

I've seen it twice now, I'm such a nerd. Did anyone else spot the tribble on Scotty's desk in the ice planet?

Actually, Kumar Does! It's HAROLD who lacks the charisma. :P
