This map (http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2007/06/10/131-us-states-renamed-for-countries-with-similar-gdps/) renames states to nations with similar GDPs. Interesting. Note that soon-to-be-world-conqueror Iran is on fiscal par with...Alabama. My current home of North Carolina is comparable to Sweden (only in GDP unfortunately).

No, actually Iran's actual physical size is larger then France, Germany, England, and a few other small countries combined is what I believe i posted, but I don't think we discussed their GDP.

Years ago my house was the equivilent of Amsterdam...but I became a father and had to act responsibly

I thought we discussed Iran's gdp in our discussion about chartiable giving, but I don't recall there ever being a comparison of Iran's GDP to France or Germany.

I think we compared the US to other european countries, don't remember comparing anyone's GDP to Iran though. Would be pretty hilarious to try and support Iran in that one :)

We may have begun, but promptly changed discussion when we began discussing the fact that they have sanctions and embargo's on them.

While it may not be earth shattering, Alabama is in the top half of the US States in terms of GDP. Huntsville has had some brisk growth over the past decade.

I don't remember ever speaking about their health care, but we did discuss them no longer being a 3rd world country.

*points a finger*

Liked the map, indeed I like cartography and demography quite a lot (lots of historic maps in my study).
If anyone else likes historical figures, here's some interesting ones relating to the above map (but, of course, way back when):

Country, National Income, Population and per Capita Income of the Powers in 1914
US $37bn 98m $377
UK $11bn 45m $244
Germany $12bn 65m $184
France $6bn 39m $153
Italy $4bn 37m $108
Russia $7bn 171m $41
Austria-Hungary $3bn 52m $57
Japan $2bn 55m $36

Here's another quite eye opening one I believe:

GNP of the European Great Powers 1830-1890 (in 1960 US dollars and prices)

Name 1830 1850 1870 1890

Russia 10.5bn 12.7bn 22.9bn 21.1bn
Britain 8.2bn 12.5bn 19.6bn 29.4bn
France 8.5bn 11.8bn 16.8bn 19.7bn
Germany 7.2bn 10.3bn 16.6bn 26.4bn
Aust-Hung 7.2bn 9.1bn 11.3bn 15.3bn
Italy 5.5bn 6.6bn 8.2bn 9.4bn

Of course always take these things with a grain of salt (they are hardly representative of relative power) but they help put things in to perspective. For example, Britain was supposedly in 'decline' by the end of the nineteenth century but of course we can see she actually possessed the highest GNP of all the powers (including the 'New Industrial' countries, such as the US and Germany), whereas the supposedly new Imperial power Japan, though aggressive in the pacific by 1914, was hardly on the same economic footing as even the weakest European Great Power.

Cheers.

Halo, until you guys start driving on the right side of the road you are all doomed .....

Haloface
01-20-2008, 02:36 AM
Oh, but we do drive on the "right" side.

The left side of the road was the traditional side of travellers throughout history for thousands of years. There are a number of reasons, for example the right hand was traditionally a sword hand and warriors in martial and violent socieities travelled on the left so they could use their right hand better if a potential enemey was coming toward them on the road. Another example is that most people used to mount horses from the left side (and of course still do) so it was easier to jump on or off mounts while leaving the right side for traffic. This was the tradition for travelling for many millenium.

Until... dun dun dun...

The US and France during the eighteenth century began using big wagons to transport bulk farm produce by using several pairs of horses. As a result, the driver sat on the left rear horse so he could not only lash the front horses with his right arm to go faster, but since he was on the left he also wanted oncoming traffic to keep to his left so he could make sure the large and so vulnerable wheels that bulk cargo wagons used would not get caught/clash with oncoming traffic. This was given authority in France after the fall of the Bastile, when before 1794 peasents were made to keep to the right while the left side of the road was reserved for aristocracy, the Directorate (France's revolutionary government) legislated that from now on all should travel on the right - those who did not were aristocrats liable for hanging.

This law remained under Napoleon and spread to most of continental Europe with the expansion of the Napoleonic Empire. It remained throughout revolutionary nineteenth century Europe and exported to colonial territories throughout the world. Only Britain remained on the left hand side. Although it may seem that most countries now drive on the right, that is actually incorrect.

As Britain also meant the British Empire - which covered a quarter of the globe - funnily enough a quarter of countries drive on the left still. India, Australia, New Zealand, English-speaking African countries, pretty much most Commonwealth countries (ie former British colonies like Cyprus).
Even those not part of the British Empire but perhaps part of its 'Informal Empire' drive on the left as a result, for example British capital and manpower was largely responsible for building modern Japan, which included roads and railroads, which is why they drive on the left.

So for thousands of years driving on the left was traditional, until a lot of you cranks switched to the right, while a lot, under British influence, remained to this day traditional in keeping to the left.

Hope that helps :P
