View Full Version : Stuff you couldn't live without..

Well EQ has changed dramatically over the years. And IMO, become a much, much easier version of itself. Simplified, idiot-proof, advancement and success handed on a platta.

So what two things do you think you couldn't live without, now that you look back?

First one, for me, has gotta be the item linking.
Having to type stats for every single item when someone needed to/wanted to see it was the biggest nightmare. I have absolutely no idea how I put up with it. Infact, I can barely remember not having it. Or is that.. don't want to remember? :P

PoK books!!!! 'Nuff said. 100pp for ports.. fucking druid capitalists!

Oh, and a sneaky third - Bazaar.
Yeah EC was good fun, and Gfay back in the day was funny, but dear lord.. having to personally deal with the morons you bought things from was torture. "How much for that Lammy?" "How much do YOU think its worth?" /sigh

Big friends lists, I've even managed to fill up 100 :(
'Raid' interface is useful, but we got by without it back in the day.

All the other stuff I can really do without. Some (bazaar, pok books, x-server channels, remote item linking, etc) IMO have really taken away a lot of the integrity of the game.

Dear god.. how could I leave that one out.
CHANNELS.

I can't even recall how people got along, officers specifically, without channels.

hmm...

the raid function!
gives everyone xp! woot... :p

the linking thing and bazaar are pretty helpful too, but whatever happened to haggling and trying to trade useless junk for actually worthwhile stuff?!?!?!?

oh wait...I hate that kind of stuff. Go Sony!

>PoK books!!!! 'Nuff said.

These were probably in the running for most harmful addition to the game. It would have been better if they had put them all in PoT.

ainwein

They should have done the PoK books like they did the ports to Velious in the beginning.

Have a 'key' of sorts that you had to retrieve from the location before you could take the portal there.

Ya this will open a nice can of worms.

Before PoK you felt as if you were actually in a world. When you gave a tell to your friend to see where he was and he tells you Paw or something, and you were in Greater Fay, you knew there was a great distance between you.

Now, wanna go from G Fay to Paineel? Hop skip and a jump and you crossed the world.

Yeah, PoK books lost somethin in the immersion factor for me.

Haloface
12-29-2003, 08:43 PM
Like I said - simplified.
That's what Verant have gone for. They've never implemented any change, since release, to make Norrath more real or challenging. Every addition made has been to make the world smaller and easier, from the get-go.

But shit, there was only so much fun you could have standing around for a druid on a power trip to charge less than 100pp, before it got kind of old.

And thats the downfall of not making a porting class. Such as it's a downfall to not make a cleric, you can't res yourself.

How about KEI

Qaman
12-29-2003, 09:08 PM
Actually, the ideal way PoK ports should have worked would have been a quest for a flag to activate each of them for a given character. And the questing should have been around the area where they ported to. I would have put a lower level limit on this as well. Might even have limited the number of flags you could have by level, so you had to make choices.

But as implemented, they basically are a fairly stupid addition to the game.

Before the Raid function there was XP GROUPS when people actually nuked as much as they could to get the xp for their group! Now people slack ~ abolish raid window!

giena
12-29-2003, 10:22 PM
Qaman, thats actually a pretty good idea. I like that one!

Maybe only allow you have say, five, PoK stones available for your use. It may involve a simple little quest for you to use, but you can't have more than 5 stones active.

Sure, it still takes away from the immersion factor, but it does a good job at limiting the impact. Someone earlier posted about how you would send a tell to a friend to see where they were, so true, so true.

Now, I bet a quarter of the people in game couldnt even tell you where Paw/Infected Paw is at.

Jazya how come i never see y()u in the channel? AyRo or Serverwide?

Serverwide is a bit on the spam-heavy side for me, unless i'm really bored or have like no friends online. AyRo on the other hand is the opposite... usually the only one there.

The PoK books were a ploy to get the lower level players to buy PoP. Otherwise most did not have the ability to access even tier one zones at PoP release.

I'm a post pop baby.. but I am pertty sure there wasn't a level req for potranq back then.. and also I'm sure just traveling to freeport from halas was reason enough to get the expansion for any level...

Pre-PoP I couldn't live without velks. If there were more than 30 people in the zone I'd just log off and consider it a wasted xp day.

EQ in a window!! I love not having to camp out of the game to look something up. And yes...item linking is another for me along with the shared bank.

POK books suck
Remeber when overther was the zone to be in at 30-40?
Remeber what it took too get there.
1 . port too Fay or BB then then too docks wait for boat too FV then run through LOIO and FM then too OT.
2. port too EC, Nro or Sro, run too oasis wait for boat too tim deep hope not kos too ogres, then jump off boat before it reached OT dock if you kos and swim too shore.
3 port too SF ( druid dangerous, Wiz near certain death if your 30-40) run too SF LOL not many did that.

now its just port with book too OT

EQ could have done with out POK

Couldn't live w/o the changes to Damage over Time spells with mobs moving. (used to do partial damage if mob was chasing you)

Made aggro kiting and taking down big mobs easy ^_^

I can think of a lot of good additions to the game since I started playing, some have already been mentioned like the raid windows, and pok books. Personally I REALLY adore VOQ, even using kei just doesn't cut it anymore hehe.. oh and focus effects on items those rock!

Kivorn

Clip Plane Sliding bar.
Message filtering (ie: your hits, others hits etc, for you newbies... imagine playing in a group where you saw EVERYTHING everyone else did, including their melee damage).
Movable windows/customizable UI. Customizable UIs suck arse coding wise, but hey they beat the snot out of the original UI.

I hate Kei. I remember when it came out, it was really cool if you were lucky enough to have a chanter with it, but it wasn't a necessity.

Now, every time I get a fucking group we have to wait for EVERY caster to run and get it. We made it along fine pre-Luclin, it's kind of sad that it's a requirement to grind now.

Granted, I know it makes killing faster, but seriously. Waiting an extra 20 minutes for the group to go get kei < fighting without it.

The new UI that makes your spell book windowed and the fact that you can med without looking at your spellbook. I hated sitting with the ugly bulky interface medding and not being able to see what was going on.

Having a window mode for EQ (someone already said that)

Multiple windows. I cant imagine what all i missed when there was one window and seeing all battle text flying by. I was lucky if i caught a glimpse of the purple /tell text and scrolled back up in time to catch it.

Santerre
01-19-2004, 10:25 PM
Bah, medding without a spellbook up was always in game, its just that you used to have to earn it!

Lahle
01-19-2004, 11:06 PM
oh yeah! forgot about that. They took out that lvl requirement (it was lvl 30 if i remember correctly) when i was about lvl 35.

I'm another of the few who think that PoK books suck.
I hate seeing people who don't know their way around basic zones.

My favorite changes are probably the new UI.. the bazaar.. mainly because anytime I'd want buy anything in EC the ass would say.. make an offer. No tell me how much you want cockface or fuck off!

Can't think of anything else that has had as much of a positive effect on playing for me.
