Likely.

We notice thousands and thousands of things that never filter up to the level of conscious thought. We're really good at spotting colors, representative imagery, and lettering, and exceptionally good at spotting other people, particularly faces.

The interesting part to me, is that we're now in roughly the third generation of humans that have grown up in a pervasively hostile environment of advertising designed to make us do things and buy things we otherwise never would, in what amounts to a direct and calculated attack on the zeitgeist of western civilization. We're getting better at spotting ads, and better at ignoring them, but you have to wonder if much of the recent hemming and hawing over the decline of morality or whathaveyou has a lot more to do with subversive psychological poisoning during childhood than GTA and gay people getting married.

This stuff is scary. How influancable we are.

Did you check the other vids from Derren Brown on youtube? "Subliminal suggestions" is almost spooky. Great stuff there.

I'm aware of the power of the unconscious and how powerfully the subliminal ties into that. I just have a hard time believing they were so strongly influenced by the few planted ideas and none of the millions of other uncontrolled ones they probably saw on the way.

Slow down for those spots and repeat the imagery. They also gave them something strongly tied to their planted imagery that was largely divorced from most other available advertising memes. The well controlled "WtF?" look when he revealed the taxidermy was great.

Did you guys watch any of the other ones? The guy shopping in the supermarket - I couldn't believe that he followed that exact path through the isles.

Big bump. Derren Brown's show is now on Sci Fi with re-runs on USA. Thursday (tomorrow) @ 10:00 for the 2nd episode.

This advertising thing he redid on the US version. Went just the same way.

"Blink" and "Influense: The Psychology of Persuasion" are two good book to read about this general phenomenon.

I dunno. There's some truth in there, but I think it's like anything else that's videotaped. How many takes do you suppose it took to get that perfect setup, and how much was edited out? Why they were undoubtedly influenced, I question the actual extent of it.

I've seen several more of his UK shows and read up a lot more on it more since originally starting the thread.

That stuff is every bit as real as they suggest, if not more. Our unconscious is extremely receptive and influences far more of our decision making process than we'd probably like to admit.

The best show of his to show how really true it is would be his stage show "Something Wicked This Way Comes" where its all taped from start to finish. There isn't any room to manipulate the cameras with editing since its just live switching. I'll figure out a way to upload it. Since Sanchek posted this I downloaded *every* one of his shows and watched them all and read one of his books.
