So, is it true that CBS refuses to air this (http://www.moveon.org/cbs/ad/)?

EDIT: Changed censorship to refusal in subject line.

Cause it's not out of place or anything during a sports game.

We always see ads that might be considered "out of place" during a sports game (women's hygiene products, anyone?). More likely, the makers of the ad can't pony up the costs of placing the ad during the Super Bowl.

Or they're right, and CBS doesn't want to air that kind of political message. It's not like massive corporations don't have political leanings and do what they can to support them.

Or they're right, and CBS doesn't want to air that kind of political message.I read an article about this ordeal in the newspaper the other day, and apparently CBS has a policy of not airing ads for "advocacy" groups, or something to that effect.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone happen to know what music track is being played in this commercial?

Though I agree with the sentiments of the ad....

Showing children working menial jobs illegally in the middle of a superbowl is not acceptable.

If you want to stick Kerry or Dean's mug up there talking about the consequences of a out of control deficit, fine. But this ad is out of place during a superbowl, IMO.

its not censorship when they dont want to air a commercial on their channel, thats just refusing a business relationship.

Censorship is something completly different and a whole deal graver.

CBS is #1, screw the makers of that commercial

Any way you slice it, it looks like CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech.Actually, they're exercising free speech and choosing what to show and what not to show on a private station.

Hubbe beat me to it. That isn't censorship, last I checked CBS was still a privately owned station and not run by the government. Generally speaking, they can show whatever they darn well please.

Now, if it were a government station, or a government law saying they couldn't run an add like that, then it would be censorship.

Frankly, trying to call foul on CBS for not showing that and labeling them as the bad guy is rather hypocritical. After all, if "free speech" was really the issue, you wouldn't want to tell them what they have to air, now would ya? That site is simply a cheap publicity grab by a political group that wants their agenda aired.

that site said that there were going to be commercials advertising the Bush White House, but all i saw were commercials pushing people to vote...

My fault, used the word censorship too loosely.

Anyway, I'm not all political or anything. As a matter of fact I don't follow this stuff very often; I just happened to run across the notice.

Sure, it's fine that CBS doesn't want to accept certain ads. I just thought it was interesting if what the intro said was true about CBS not wanting to upset the Bush campaign and/or if they aren't allowed due to the "favor" granted to them.

Its nothing new, PETA has been trying to get ads on during the superbowl for years, but they've usually been refused, even though they can be some of the funniest damn commercials I've ever seen.

Outside of the normal anti smoking/drinking/drugs stuff, theres really no political ads during the superbowl.(I think)

Personally, I wish someone at CBS had 'refused' to televise Janet Jackson's spangled mammary gland at the halftime show. And sheesh, what was *she* thinking? It wasn't all that, especially given how bad her makeup looked... (or maybe it was a deliberate distraction, heh ;) )

C'mon guys, it's family television. Do you *have* to stick that thing out there just because you can? There's 'pushing the envelope'... and then there's just tasteless. I think some PETA commercials with blood on furs or whatever they're doing this year would have been less stomach-churning...

Well.......

CBS is a publicly owned company. Obviously, however, they can pick and choose their business relationships.

Their broadcasts must, of course, adhere to FCC (government) established rules.

Well, they are using public spectrum granted to them by the government. There are certain requirements born out of that arrangement.

Still, I can see them having a policy to not take advocacy adds like this during certain shows.

What I will never figure out in this country is why people get so upset about a little nudity on TV, but it is perfect OK to show a guy get stabbed in the gut with a 6" knife during primetime.

I say out a "V" chip in every device and let the parents decide what goes into their house. Then you can show whatever you want any time of the day. Of course we know that will never happen, but I can dream.

Personally, I use the "adult lockout" features of my home electronics to block all those religious channels. I wouldn't want anyone to stumble on that accidentally.

The same faggot hippies for this commercial are the same ones that called every American a terrorist or terrorist supporter because they drove cars, which are powered by gasoline. The deficit is something we can run up as much as we want and it will never ever matter the way our economy is set up. Bush didn't magically inflate the deficit to 1 trillion dollars single handedly. A large chunk war during the Reagan era. But every president since the 1960's or even earlier has raised the deficit every year, no attempt has ever been made to pay if off, only lessen it... Want to know why? Because it really doesn't fucking matter, and as much as people think it will effect us, like global warming, it really won't. We have a better chance of dying by a meteor.

By private I simply meant not government owned. But fair enough.

There are rules for other things too, airing of campaign stuff, media content, a whole host of FCC restrictions. But they do have control over whether or not they show something like that ad, and to imply otherwise is to limit their free speech - I guess that's what I think is funny about the whole thing.

Almost makes me want to vote Republican now. :)
