View Full Version : Survey for fun: Music
I'm interested in what you guys listen to. But to keep it easy:
1. you can only list 5 musical groups
2. you can list 5 songs that are not in those groups
3. you can not amend your list, only add posts.
Currently I listen to mostly
1. ELO
2. John Lennon
3. Audioslave
4. Depeche Mode
5. Fountains of Wayne
Ah, forget the rules, just list what you like....

Currently listening to:
Lil' Wayne - Dedication 2 (http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Wayne-The-Dedication-2-mid799.html)
This guy is at the top of the rap game right now. He has definitely grown on me over the last year or so. The link leads to a free (and legal!) download of his newest stuff. If you have any interest in rap you should give him a chance. You either love him or hate him.
Muse - Assortment
A lot of people didn't like Black Holes and Revelations. I thought it was decent, but their older stuff is definitely more up my alley. I usually cannot just listen to a full CD, however. Some songs they just completely miss the boat on.
311 - All
Started listening to these guys in elementary school. Lots of people don't like them. I definitely prefer the singing to the 'rap' parts, but still totally dig the sound. It's light and fun to dance to.
Cake - Fashion Nuggett/Comfort Eagle
I haven't actually listened to them as much as I used to as of late, but they still are one of my favorite acts. Their new stuff isn't very good, but these two albums rock!
After these my list would fall off into a myriad of different artists that I definitely like, but can't really justify placing one above the other. I like a lot of oldies, a lot of rap, and a lot of stuff that's just a product of being raised during the 90s.

My roomate went to a Muse concert earlier this year (I should have gone but I thought I was going to be out of town so I didn't buy a ticket). He said they rocked hard live. I'm keeping an eye out for when they come around again.

No kidding. The last album was just weird and mostly not good.

Is it clean or more hard core? I'm not into rap but my kid loves it.... If it is relatively non-expletive I will check it out for him :)

I like the new Wu-Tang as well.
Bise - Lil Wayne is definitely not clean. I'd be hard-pressed to name any decent rap that is, however. He goes on about the traditional money, guns, drugs thing. What most people like about him are his delivery, beats, and his lyrics. A lot of people think he has a ghostwriter, and I'm inclined to agree given the HUGE jump in material from his early stuff to his 'reincarnation'.
This is more mainstream Wayne, was a single (http://youtube.com/watch?v=UL4wBZ6-Wws)
I like this style more (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1U7vPhe9bV0)

1. String Cheese Incident (Carnivale '99 is fantastic, but I have all their stuff)
2. Allman Brothers
3. Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia Band
4. John Prine
5. Everything Eric Clapton has been involved with
This is a really hard thing to nail down, because I might have a Nancy Griffith cd in, and follow it with Led Zeppelin II, and then some Grover Washington Jr, and then Pink Floyd, and then The Wreckers, and then Stevie Ray. I like a lot of stuff, hehe.
And Van Morrison is always a great listen!!!

1. Rammstein
2. Tool
3. Clutch
4. Nine Inch Nails
5. Mushroomhead
Recently I have been listening to 5 Finger Death Punch a lot, but with only one CD, I can't put them into my top 5.

Wein, there's a lot of what I feel is good hip hop, that isn't plagued with the cliche gangsta content. Pretty much everything on Rhymesayers records is awesome.
The indy hip hop acts are definitely my favorite:
Atmosphere
Brother Ali
Eyedea and Abilities
Blackalicious
MF Doom
Sage Francis (Non-Prophets)
Murs (Living Legends)
I think most of the beats and flows are superior to any kind of main stream rap you'll hear, I listen to some of that, too. The indy stuff also tends to have more intelligent content and different subject matter, and a more positive message in general.

I listen to almost anything grunge, alternative, metal, or hard rock. I don't really have a favorite but I'll list what it's in my changer. On occassion I am forced to listen to 80's music by Leah. I took her to Ozzfest this year, she took me to see Annie Lennox. I guess it's a good trade off :0
3 Days Grace
Staind
Drowning Pool
GreenDay
Trans Siberian Orchestra :D

Yeah, my son called me a couple weeks back asking if I thought it would be a good gift for his girlfriend to get her tickets, because she likes their stuff. I said "hell ya", of course. Waiting now to hear how he liked the show, too.

Rover, with Traffic, Dead and Allman Brothers on your list, I have got to recommend that you check out the String Cheese Incident. They do some jams that rival any of the above, and are able to tie blue grass, rock, jazz and world music all together into a single jam. They have several live CD's, as well as studio stuff. Carnivale '99 is probably the best intro CD to their music, being a double-cd live issue.
BTW, my musical highlight of the year was seeing Steve Winwood at the Eric Clapton Chicago Guitar Festival (on video :() doing "Dear Mr Fantasy" live. I never thought I would have that opportunity again. Sheer bliss!!!
String Cheese Incident? Has anyone seen that commercial with the voice activated car radio???

The Cramps have been around a LONG time. Not my style of music, but they've been around as long as I've been alive. Literally. They formed in 1976.
