This conversation has reminded me of how hard I laugh when people i know that don't typically swear are super pissed off, and try swearing, and totally place the swear words in the wrong spot in the sentence.

Ex 1: Would you answer fucking the phone!?

Swear words emphasize disrespect. That is why people do not like seeing those words amongst people they want to have respect for.

I swear often outside of the workplace. Still, in a professional atmosphere, it is pretty certain you won't get far if you profane to a great degree.

I agree with those who say that making swearing a substantial part of your daily vocabulary really dilutes the effect of cussing. When I call someone a pig-fucking, sperm burping donkey felcher, I want them to realize I am annoyed at them and not just saying "hello".

It seems to me that swearing is used by different folks for different reasons:

to demonstrate a lack of respect for another;

to anger, or provoke someone;

to hurt someone;

to be part of "the group", much like kids start smoking;

to "rebel", knowing Mom and Dad would disapprove;

to cover up a lack of vocabulary; and,

I am sure there are many other reasons that folks can come up with.

Personally, I swear when I am angry and not taking the time to think about what I am saying. If I am among a group that knows and understands me to some extent, the swearing usually causes little problem; but, when I do so among strangers there is usually a reaction from at least one if not more, that I in most cases would rather have not had to deal with.

It is funny, but most of the kids I see swearing the most are the same "suburban brats" wearing their pants around their knees and trying their best to adopt a Martin Lawrence strut as they listen to their hip-hop pretending they can relate to inner city youth. Ack.....where did that come from?

I don't swear much. When I do, it usually has an effect (woah, Cara swore!!) because of this.

I guess what I don't like about swearing is the lack of creativity. I mean.. there are only so many swear words, you know? And there are a ton of other adjectives available in the English language that require more thought.

A person that says for example, fuck, several times in the same sentence albeit used in different ways, seems to be less intelligent and rather boring. After so many of these statements, I tend to zone and must make a conscious effort to follow the conversation.

If I am hiring someone and their language tends to be unprofessional during the interview, you can bet I am not going to choose them for the job. Why? They lack common sense. Most people know that it offends many others when they choose to be a potty mouth. That is not usually how a company wants to be viewed.

However! Talk how you wish outside of the work environment. I could care less. Or in keeping with this thread, I don't give a flyin fuck. ;)

But nydia reminded me of a very funny incident back in highschool. We were sitting in P.O.T. (principles of technology. which we had notebooks, and we labeled them Pot book ;) ) and a friend of mine asked the resident slacker/guy who couldn't give a fuck, what a colorful metaphor was. What made the response so funny, was that they were siting right by the teachers desk while she was sitting there, and Mike(the slacker) nonchalantly replied, "Oh, words like shit and fuck." He got ISS lol. God that asshole was funny.

I went to boot camp 1 week after highschool ended and i was 18 at the time but i "joined" when i was 17 had parents permission and had to do 1 year in the delayed entry program, didnt have any real plans after high school and i couldnt afford colledge. Im from a marine family also, brother was in Marines and in Beruit and my father did several tours in Vietnam. Needless to say the "brainwashing" that goes in in bootcamp didnt have any effect on me cause i grew up with a friggen Drill Instructor as a father

Kinda interested in how things work over there and I visited a friend of mine recently who is in the Army (US Airforce) and I became a lot more interested in the reasons why people join the army in the first place.

While i was in i signed up for the GI Bill, while it wont pay for everything is sure helped. I still didnt end up going to colledge, ended up going to trade school for computer repair. Even with the GI Bill there was no way i could afford colledge. What i SHOULD have done was take colledge courses while i was in the Marines, then they would have paid for it, but at the time i was young and wasnt thinking about my future, at the time i was thinking more about the here and now
