View Full Version : Syfy Meets MST3K

Last night I had to stay off my feet due to an episode of gout, and the distraction of the discomfort kept me from putting in the "Birds of Prey" series I had just received in the mail. What to do? Well, Syfy usually has movies on Saturday night, so let's look there.

/sigh I feel so used. :(

Syfy has apparently taken to making movies that will then go right to MST3K after one airing, only because they are so bad word of mouth will keep anyone from watching if they air it again.

I am talking about "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus", starring (?) Deborah Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas. I almost switched over to the Charger - Falcons game, but figured that would be just as predictable and silly. This movie centered around a few silly effects (the shark leaping from the ocean to take down a passenger airliner, the shark biting through the Golden Gate bridge, the octopus taking down an off shore oil rig) and an almost incoherent script. Lamas is the government idiot that wants to nuke the ocean to kill the monsters, and Gibson (an American oceanographer) turns out to have had "one night" with the Japanese scientist leading that country's naval forces in the pursuit of the Octopus.

Maybe if we can get them to go back to being SciFi the movie production might improve again, but I can only expect to see this drivel they are doing now as future MST3K 'entertainment'.

Haha, this isn't a recent thing - SciFi used to air all sorts of awful made-for-tv-movies about all sorts of absurd stuff.

Oh c'mon, Bylimet, the old Sci Fi wasn't much better - they were, after all, the network that brought us 'Mansquito' ;)...

Sometimes I think the scene in the programming room at 'SciFi/Syfy''s headquarters goes something like this:

"and *then* /ten year old boy voice on) "the shark flies into the air and chomps on the airplane, like this (makes motion with hands) it'll be awesome"...

Sorry to hear about the gout, and I trust at least it was bad enough to be hilarious?

Regards,
Nydia

What totally blows my mind is this: SciFi will axe shows like Stargate that have a quality following and Battlestar Galactica. So they can save money to put out movies like that. What the fuck are they drinking?

Thanks for the sympathy; better to have pain in the feet than kidney stones, which is the alternative to uric acid buildup, I guess.

And as for the movie's hilarity, it was more an ongoing conversation with the television along the lines of "....wtf? .....are you freakin' kidding me .... oh fer Christ's sake....", and so on.

But yeah, I guess the movies have always been on the sorry side of the fence.

It's interesting how many good scifi series are spread across other networks, while SciFi (SyFy, if you must) seems to produce very few quality shows - and certainly doesn't try to air them during competitive times.

I saw the ad for that movie - I was hoping it was a tongue in cheek throwback to old monster movies? I didn't catch it.

The blood of young, hot, but tainted reality show runner-ups in Mansquito II: Hard Sucking.

Well, the reality is an episode of Stargate probably cost them dramatically more per minute than airing the film that someone else paid for. This is a film that already was shot, edited, screened in theaters, and is simply looking for any other dollars they can pick up. Stargate or BSG or any original programming on the other hand has a full assortment of costs associated with them.

What Kelraz said. It is a cost thing. BSG and Stargate are very expensive to make.

Besides, that movie was made before the name change to SyFy.

Speaking of MST3K, why did they stop making THAT show? It was a real gem, in my opinion....

It was on for about 14 years and eventually its ratings started to drop.

Yeah, I just read that on the website. It just doesn't seem like it was on for that long. Regardless, probably one of the best shows, ever made. And movies like "Giant Octopus Vs Mega Shark" are perfect for that type of format.

Wow, I didn't know MST3k ran all the way to 1999, after Joel had been gone a season or so I stopped watching.

I thought Mike was pretty funny. But Joel was by far my favorite. All of the shows with him are classics.

IIRC most of the movies on ScFi are made by them, a good many even feature characters from their Friday night series. I just hope their new Stargate series doesn't get axed in it's prime much like Atlantis

I'm downloading season 1 on Bittorrent. Should make for a great "bad movie weekend" with my son.

Any idea when Caprica will launch?
