A friend let me use his wife's computer so I can play vanguard. After removing 2 viruses and 6 trojans, I still have a problem. I get a pop up coming up like a system message telling me I need to download a registry cleaner.
I ran Adaware, AVG Antivirus and Spybot and it keeps coming back. When I downloaded the updates to Spybot, it came up with a warning that said something in the computer changed its configuration and to check for viruses.

I am at a total loss here. Any help would be appreciated.

Two of the programs I personally love and trust are A Squared (there is a freeware edition) and CCleaner (also free). MaximumPC recommended them and I have to say they've both been excellent, with A Squared getting rid of spyware, malware and adware and the like, and CCleaner (3 guesses as to what the first C stands for), which allows for registry cleanups, deletion of temp files, and tidying up the startup menu.

Do a google for either and you should have them downloading in minutes.

Hope this helps. :)

Have you checked the net for a removal tool for something referencing this reg cleaner popup?

If I get some time I'll poke around for you but do you have a name of said program?

one was for regristrycleanerxp.com the other was for reg32 or something along those lines.

( switched back to my com for while I look for solutions.)

When you install CCleaner, there is an option there for fixing up and removing dead registry entries. Check the options along the left hand side, you should be able to figure it out in a minute or two.

Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

Its trend-micro, the makers of PC-Cillin. Its free. Click "Scan Now It's Free", (and again). I prefer the Java kernel, but I don't think it really matters, and you'll want to do the full Malware, Greyware and Vulnerabilities scan. Make sure no one closes the window. Only downside is if its a browser based virus / malware it can cause problems with the scan.

I've found that most of the time Housecall will at the very least *find* the problem, and usually it will fix it. If it can't fix it, at least you might know what you're looking to fix ; ).

Sometimes programs don't work and you have manually clean things. The biggest problem is finding the culprit.

I did some searches and found a few sites...

http://411-spyware.com/remove-registry-cleaner

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453097339

http://www.spywareremove.com/removeRegistryCleaner.html

I use eTrust since I get it for free since we're heavy CA customers; not that I'm advocating CA b/c god knows their products cause me tremedous headaches and long nights debugging but they do have some good info some times.

I'm not sure based on your posts whether or not the item is installed or is asking you to install it. I could have missed that so sorry if I did. These links tell you specifically how to remove it and based on what I read it sounds like if it is installed it will produce annoying pop-ups.

Google the exact errors you're getting or files they claim you need to download - nine times out of ten you'll come up with search results on reputable forums offering step by step instructions for removal.

I picked up something nasty last year, and found posts from (I think it was AdAware?) employees walking other people through the removal. The removal was lengthy and much more complicated than running a program, but worked first try and as long as I followed the instructions, very simple.

Best bet with anything computer related is to assume you are't the only one with it, and look for people who have already solved the problem.
