The German government also denied there was any link between Hamadi's release and the freeing of Suzanne Osthoff, a German archaeologist, in Iraq last week.

"There is no relation between the release of Hamadi and the release of Osthoff," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told the news conference.

Bullshit!

Nothing new here. They already tried and set loose one of the 9/11 terrorists.

Mohammed Ali Hamadi was released Thursday and allowed to return to his native Lebanon on the next day, after qualifying for parole after 19 years in prison, said Ulrich Hermanski, spokesman for the North Rhine Wesphalia state justice ministry.

Apparently he "qualified" for parole.

The article also stated that federal Justice Ministry spokeswoman Eva Schmierer denied reports that the US had an extradition request.

...Washington approached the authorities in Beirut, where Petty Officer Stethem's murder occurred and where Hamadi arrived on Friday.
A senior State Department official said Hamadi was in "temporary custody" in Lebanon, although it was not clear where or when he was arrested. Mr. McCormack said Washington was "talking to the Lebanese government" about bringing him to the United States, but that the issue was complicated by the lack of an extradition treaty with Lebanon.
Germany refused to extradite Hamadi to the United States because he could face the death penalty. It also argues that he has been punished for his crime, and that trying him in a U.S. court would constitute double jeopardy.
Maybe we have some new friends in Lebanon...

I'm a HUGE believer in Life in Prison being LIFE in prison. That being said though, this fellas been in jail since 1985? That's 20 years. That's longer by far than most "Life" sentences in the US. I can see this being legitimate, with just a bad bit of coincidence in the timing.

/shrug
