OK guys, it might not be as glammy, but it could be just as false and formal as the real thing! Pick your favourite 3 movies of 2009, in order!
Mine:
1. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
2. Star Trek
3. Inglorious Basterds

These only work if you give reasons for picking the movies. :P I didn't see as many movies as I'd like but these would be my favorites. I didn't order 2 and 3 because I honestly dunno, Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, and Taken could all also be in those 2 spots for me.
500 Days of Summer
It helped that I can relate to quite a lot in this movie(I'm pretty much the exact audience it seems to be aimed for), but damn I love it. The expectation/reality scene is one of my favorite scenes in recent memory as well. It may not be considered the "best" movie of the year, but it's certainly my favorite.
Up.
If you didn't like this movie you're dead inside. The only reason it isn't taken seriously for the Oscars is because it's a "family movie."
The Hurt Locker.
Roger Ebert said it up well: ""The Hurt Locker" is a great film, an intelligent film, a film shot clearly so that we know exactly who everybody is and where they are and what they're doing and why. The camera work is at the service of the story. Bigelow knows that you can't build suspense with shots lasting one or two seconds. And you can't tell a story that way, either -- not one that deals with the mystery of why a man like James seems to depend on risking his life. A leading contender for Academy Awards."

1. The Hurt Locker
2. District 9
3. Star Trek
Note: There are actually a lot of big movies that came out in 2009 that I did not see, so it could change once I do.

Oohh discw, forgot about 500 Days of Summer, that was a bloody good flick. I think it's one of those movies where you've had to have had some kind of relative experience from the guy's point of view, which made it even more of a great picture.
Hurt Locker was good, great, even, but I just couldn't squeeze it onto my list :(
District 9 was brilliant, but is it just me, or was it a one-watch movie? I don't think I could be bothered to sit through it again.

Turn in your man card at your earliest possible convenience. :p
As for me:
1. Avatar
Story was standard (hello Pocahontas), but everything about this movie brought out how far we've come as far as special effects go. The actors threw themselves into the story with gusto, and they more than made up for the fact that it had "been done before". Wonderful soundtrack, wonderful effects, etc.
2. Star Trek
Gives the entire series a reboot really, which is both good and bad for me. I never really got into Star Trek (more of a Star Wars kid), but it felt like things were going off the wall. Actors are solid, and I feel like they've got time to grow into the shoes of the actors that game before. Also, Zachary Quinto was good and the kid they got for Kirk has potential too.
3. Up
Melancholy. Great movie, but damn I just felt bad for a good part of it. Story was great, acting was solid, graphics were well polished.

You need to go see Avatar. It's the most theatre-worthy film since... ever.

I don't go to the theater a lot, but my three favorites this year were:
1. The Hurt Locker (hold-your-breath tension and versimillitude until almost the end, when it went a little the top with the protagonist, although the supermarket scene was amusing)
2. Star Trek (largely for nostalgic reasons, it was a bit too cute, but how nice to see the franchise and characters so lovingly updated)
3. Tosca (okay, not a movie, but part of the Metropolitan Opera's Live in HD series - but just awesome, and such a daring restaging that the stuffy Met patrons booed the production team at its premiere ;) ) )
Honorable Mention goes to Paranormal Activity, which beat Blair Witch up one side of the street and down the other and kept you sucked in until almost the end. Faervas didn't like this, but I liked the verite' style which was a lot of what gave The Hurt Locker its punch as well.
Most well-received movie that I couldn't stand - Vicky Christina Barcelona, which my family made me sit through when I was there for the holiday (granted, it beat 'Undercover Brother' ;) ). While this was surprisingly highbrow for them, and Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and Scarlet Johanssen were all ravishingly beautiful, god what an annoying piece of 'la dolce vita' type tripe - it lacked the punch of Woody Allen's better films and was a more or less a gauzy bit of 'nostalgia for halcyon days that never existed except for the idle rich' porn.

Nydia

I watched the Hurt Locker, no idea why people think its such an award winning movie. It was "ok" for me at best.

Maybe - let me check with the signifigant other. We went to the IMAX Experience theater in Alexandria, but it wasn't a real IMAX and I'd love to see it again before it leaves the theaters. Where is it showing in Baltimore?

Really? I am of the absolute opposite opinion... I have no idea why anyone would think it's not. I suppose if you just don't like war films /shrug
Honestly, though, I think one of the factors that made it so great for me was the fact that I've been playing so much MW2 lately. Modern Warfare 2 might be realistic in some respects, but the multiplayer does not represent real warfare at all. To go into a film that presents the current war in such real terms was a huge reminder of that.
That aside, though, I felt that it was extremely well made.
