I don't know how many people saw it, but I was wondering...

In the sceen where all of the Americans we're fleeing into Mexico, was everyone in your theater cracking up?

I don't know if its just that where I live a good 50% of the population is hispanic, but a ton of people (including myself) found it really really funny.

Yeah, during that whole 5 minutes of the movie, the entire theater I was in was so loud you could barely hear the movie.

man throughout the majority of the movie the theater was laughing their asses off. i've never heard more cliche (sp) dialog and corny shit in one movie then in that one. "Who is that...?" "thats my DAD!" come on :(

The part I found humorous was where the President of Mexico allowed the people from the U.S. to enter, after the President of the U.S. dismissed any and all debt they owed.

Come on.... how trite can you be?

With an ice cap over two-thirds of the United States, don't you think that the economy would have been just a LITTLE bit upset? Somehow or another, I think that debt owed by other nations would have been a ways down on the list of priorities....

But I did like the special effects...

its a great movie to go watch, theres almost zero story to it

this is how it is ...

few facts come up about drastically changing weather

people in high places ignore it

next day the world freezes

after that everything is normal again

what i enjoyed about the movie was the way they visually represented stuff, the tidle cracken hitting NY, the super storms, everything freezing, its just one of those fun cheesey movies to go see

No way, the funniest part was the reporter in Los Angeles getting hit by the flying billboard!

The cameraman's reaction is classic

Meh, okay to see it at a matinee, the big screen would help to see some of the cool special effects. But other than that, no redeeming value. Sure as hell not worth full price.

I think it's a great movie, as long as you take it for what it is. A Hollywood fx apocalypse movie. Nothing more, nothing less. Sure a lot of it was cheesy, but on the whole it was less cheesy then the average movie of it's kind that I have seen - and I think I have managed to avoid seeing the cheesiest ones.

As for realism, please! It's not that kind of movie. For starters, the father and the mother both made heroically STUPID decissions - yet noone knocked some sense in them, instead their bullshit actually worked out. In reality they would of course have died for nothing. The people in New York would have been saved anyway, and the boy with cancer would of course have been left behind to die.

The Great scientist tells everyone to stay indoors for very good reasons, and then he goes for a hike himself - and he and his buddy actually gets lucky and survive so they can be saved together with the rest of teh survivors in New York. Attaboys. LOL.

As for the original question, yes, there was some laughs and cheers during the "USA people becomes illegal immigrants in Mexico" scene. And some peole clapping their hands when the movie was finished. On the whole, the movie seemed quite popular with the audience.

It was funnee because it directly criticized Bush's stance on the Kyoto protocol (tell me that "cabinet" wasnt the hollywood equivalent of bush/cheney/rice).

That, and the chick was hot.

What was even funnier was the fact that the movie made the US government out to be the bad guys, and then portrayed the entire thing as if it was going to happen anyway, regardless.

Sort of shat all over its own point.

Movie is spectacular. too bad they did not know what kind of movie they wanted to create.

A family movie, a catasthrope film, an action one, one for political use?

it was full of scientific bullshit, no society-fallback line, lame story-line...but still, amazing view...

I think they knew exactly what kind of movie they wanted to make. Actually, TDAT is pretty muh the stereotype of catasthrope film and targetgroup maximization. Rely primarily on the FX, the unreasonable levels of heroism and on the primal fears of the audience. Then throw in some family movie bullshit and some easily digested feel-good political bullshit. Isn't ALL these movies constructed in this same way?

The Day After Tomorrow: "We should care about the enviroment and the third world, mkey?"

Deep Impact: "Families should stick together so everyone can rely on each other in time of need"

Armageddon: "Plz reduce our taxes"

The Core: "You shouldn't be careless when you test new super-weapons"

:rolleyes

By the way, the "stratosphere hurricane freeze-nuke" was one of the coolest and most creative of all the unrealistic supermonsters I have seen in movies. And the "wander in the deserted wasteland and suddenly fall into a mall" concept was rather cool as well.

I will definitly steal both of them for Mutant: Undergångens Arvtagare. It's a swedish pen and paper roleplaying game that I'm gamemaster for sometimes. Translating the title would be something like: "Mutant: Legacy of the Apocalypse" or "The mutants shall inherit the apocalypse". The game takes place on a planet earth that died a millennia ago and have since been reborn. Full of monsters and humanoid animals and psionic powers and ancient artifacts. For those of you who can read swedish, it's homepage is www.mutant.nu

Well the nurse tries, and the scientist's boss tries too. ;)
The people in New York would have been saved anyway
Probably not, as the surivors were "saved" when copters saw them walking on the snow. I doubt they would have stopped to search in NY for any surivor if those wouldn't show themselves.

/shrugs It was only his son. :\
TDAT is pretty muh the stereotype of catasthrope film
There are many clichees I agree, but I found that for once the movie was far from "stereotyped". Nobody is saving the world, nothing is done to even try, and there isn't really "good" guys/nation/heroes.
Well maybe the mexicans. ;)

I think as well this movie is good for what is it, a FX movie, but for once there was a bit of originality.

The first helicopter found them in the snow AFTER they'd already landed at the library and searched it for them.

Either way, it was a "short wave transmission from doctor whoever" that convinced them to send the rescue teams in the first place. So, him going there and finding them was actually pretty important to the plot. Haha, the "plot". If you can call it that.
