One of my students (a laconic business major, who also leaves passive-aggressive critiques of questions on my exams) parroted that meme today. I've heard it from my father, also, of course, but now (as if I had any doubt) I know where it came from, at least... ;)

That said, given articles like the one I linked yesterday, and given their tendency to take a sensationalist bone and run with it, I think there *is* a certain degree of 'the sky is falling!' piling-on as the journalistic herd chases the ratings fox (pun unintentional ;) ).
