*edit* Fixed the link

Today was the final US Space Shuttle launch. Designed to put a man on the moon and service the ISS it is retiring along with the entire shuttle program. It may be 10 years before Constellation starts having launches in its mission to put a man on Mars among other things.
Kinda sad, both times I went to see a launch they were canceled.

Sorry Kel, it's not the final launch of all shuttles. There's 2 more scheduled launches left.

This was the final launch of the Atlantis.

And the Constellation program is effectively cancelled (they're keeping some of it around for emergency needs, but it's not being developed as a priority under Obama's administration). Right now America's manned space program has no planned future.

Edit: And your link doesnt work for me.

Hey, you're right about it being the last Atlantis mission, and I'm gonna have to schedule another trip to see one of the last 2 launches. Anyone wanna join me?

Yes, Obama did propose cutting the funding for the 2011 budget, but he backpedaled last month and put everything back on track. I am over at Goddard once every other week or so for a show called "Daily Planet" on Discovery Canada and we covered Constellation from the beginning, including a press event on the 16th of last month (a day or two after he "clarified" his opinion)

You're right. I was thinking of the Orion capsule.

http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/04/obama-resuscitates-orion-leaves-it-on-life-support.ars

Meanwhile, to smooth over the political upset, at least one element of the previous Moon program will be revived. The Orion crew capsule, which was originally to be terminated, will be back. But it will launch unmanned, and simply serve as an escape vehicle for the International Space Station crew.

Still, he's set a very unambitious goal of 25 years.

In reference to the Moon, he noted "we've been there before," clearly implying he didn't see significant value in going back.
Instead, he hoped to see NASA on course to reach Mars in about 25 years. Of course, NASA wouldn't be committed to any specific mission by the time he leaves office, so it's just as possible that the Moon will be restored as a goal by his successor.

A good retort about Obama's plan by former NASA administrator Michael Griffin:

But yes, you have two more chances to see a shuttle launch. One in September I think, and the other a couple months later (I forget when - it's easily googled though). I'd love to go see one again, but dont know if I'll be able to. I've seen several though, back when I was in Orlando. The night launches were spectacular.

Plan to be in Florida +/- 2 or 3 days, because the 2 times I've tried they launched late because of a storm. Good news its an hour from Orlando so there is plenty to do down there if you get stuck.

Sept 16th and some time in November, yay for hurricane season.

I've put in my vacation and am trying to round up a group. We'll see if it pans out but I definitely plan to be there for Sept.
