- Seen as we spent much time debating Guantanamo Bay in the past years, I'm surprised at the little amount of attention paid on this forum to Obama's first act as President.

Seeing as it was well publicized that this was going to be one of his first moves is probably why.
It is nice to see he kept his promise. I think suspending the tribunals was a good move as well. hopefully this can be accomplished in far less time the the 1 year allotted and we can return Gitmo back to it's true purpose. aiming missles up Castros ass.

I haven't commented as I am overwhelmed with relief at this act. This guy REALLY meant what he said...I'm very happy.

I'm glad to see this being resolved. I'm also glad to see he's taking a year to make sure this is the right step ( I suspect it's so those folks we know are dirty can't jump right back into the fight).

Inmates/detanees/terrorists are not human. Sorry. Never will be.

Since every detainee is always guilty:rolleyes:

That's fine, so long as you can prove that said inhumans ARE terrorists. If it's that clear, the trial shouldn't take long.

The prisoners at Guantanamo should have been classified as prisoners of war and treated as such in the first place. As POWs they could have been legally held indefinitely (without trial) until the conflict with Al Qaeda/Taliban is over. Trials after the conflict could have dealt with those guilty of specific crimes while the rest would only be released at the conclusion of the fighting. As it is, a number have been released early anyway only to take up the fight again. What a screwed up way to run a war!

It always stuck in my craw that Bush tried to do an end around US law to utilize what I consider to be torture on those interned there. Was it effective? Perhaps. But it also cost us dearly in moral standing and respect around the world. How many more jihadis decided to take up arms because of the activities at Guantanamo than would otherwise have done?

I'm glad Obama kept this promise, but I hope he is sensible about how to handle the more dangerous inmates now that it is closing down.

I love it. You watched Rahm jump into a limo and shoot straight to the White House to prepare this executive order the second the Inauguration was over. Was this signed before he even went to the balls?

Sorry I was too busy to comment today Halo.

If anyone had any doubt Obama was serious about his promises I hope they are subsiding. I'm excited about the coming days, weeks, months...

Yes - I think we're all excited. Excitement is definately the general feeling I get.

I have a feeling this one'll be a great President.

A Salisbury after a Gladstone.
A Churchill after a Chamberlain.

Well, it's kind of hard not to be spectacular after the act that was onstage the past 8 years.

I've heard some talk that Gerald Ford is more well liked then Bush. That's saying a LOT!

Its nice to see that he's willing to put some punch behind his promises. Still though, as mentioned before there's a few details that should be worked out to avoid causing hangups.
