Ok, I most likely would never have given this any thought, but I received "The Girl Who Played WIth Fire" for Christmas, and had to see the first before watching the second of the trilogy.
First off, they can be watched either with subtitles or dubbed into English, and I chose dubbed. Do not let a fear of subtitles dissuade you from watching these.
I have the books, but have not read them yet. This Stieg Larsson could spin a story with the best of them, based on these two movies.
The cast is a talented bunch, the editing and cinematography both very good, and the development of characters sufficient to carry the story along. (I expect the books will be more detailed.) Like every movie I have seen from Sweden, there are flat spots that leave you wondering why they are in there....I saw them in these movies as time to take a breath. I enjoyed learning about the two main characters and seeing how they pieced the puzzle together, even though I had figured out part of the end of the first movie halfway in (it really did not detract from my enjoyment).
I am looking forward to the third installment, as much for the story as to see the further development of the characters. I have purposely avoided talking about the plot itself so as to let folks see these fresh like I did, assuming they have not read the books or seen spoilers.
There are a couple of good actors in the main roles, and I would not be at all surprised to hear more about them in the future. Knowing Hollywood is now working on Americanizing the trilogy, I am glad to see the originals first and seeing the Swedish take on a Swedish writer's stories set in Sweden.
2 thumbs up
