Found this little tidbit about this incident and another:

Some, if not much of, the ill-will between the UA and ASU basketball programs is forever linked to the February 1988 game in Tempe. That was the ugly night in which Sun Devil fans made light of the assassination of Malcolm Kerr, father of UA All-American guard Steve Kerr.
That still-painful scar resurfaced again in January when Sun Devil fans shouted profanities and made inexcusable references to Lute Olson's late wife, Bobbi. Olson pointed to the scoreboard during another UA blowout victory. ASU's Rob Evans, in turn, called Olson's actions "classless."
Tucsonan Mike Redhair, an ASU point guard during that 1988 game in Tempe, says the Kerr incident was regrettable, but perhaps overblown.
"It was about an hour before the game, during informal shooting warm-ups, when there were very few people in the stands," said Redhair, a Canyon de Oro grad, and now a medical malpractice attorney. "It was just a couple of idiots, sitting alone, who shouted a few things about Kerr's father. It wasn't a concerted effort.
"(UA guard) Bruce Fraser came over to me and asked me if we could do something about it. So we had an official go tell those fans to leave. In some ways, it was taken out of proportion."
Fraser told Redhair to expect Kerr to play with unusual intensity. No kidding; Kerr scored 19 points in the first half.
"The thing about the UA rivalry was that it was hard to dislike those guys," said Redhair. "With Fraser, Kerr, Jud Buechler, Matt Muehlebach, those guys never really talked trash. They were just very businesslike. They never gave us any bulletin-board material."
