Fildien, I could be wrong but I believe he has a pick on his right thumb. That helps a lot for not loosing a finger when playing a guitar type instrument. Still, I suppose unless he's got a ton of callouses on his left hand, he'd have pretty sore fingers after that. Sliding your fingers up and down guitar strings without callouses hurts a bit. :p

hmm it could be using a pick but he was also "picking" several strings with just his fingers....or so it appeared to me. The quality wasn't all that great so I too could be wrong, it's still quite impressive.

I've seen guys play like that without picks, though never on a ukulele. I also know classical guitarists who have reinforced fingernails, it's like having five personal picks.

The man in the vid is Jake Shimabukuro. He's been pretty well known for a while in uke circles. He doesn't play it like most uke players with varied strums but uses different techniques like classical (seen in the vid), flamenco, etc.

The first time I heard him, he'd plugged in an electric ukulel and distorted it. The cat was playing blues on it!

This is a guy who is revolutionizing (some say unfortunately) the ukulele. The guy's just pretty damned bad ass!
