Please list your favorites and must sees. I keep thinking about making a list like this so I can pull things to watch/record/own but keep forgetting. I find that there's allot of movies that slipped past me thru the years that I'd like to catch up on and I have terrible CRS so your assistance is appreciated! :)
Obviously the well known titles don't need to be listed; I'm looking for things that didn't get as much press as Star Wars or LOTR.
Thanks!

Aliens. It was and still is, the best Sci Fi movie of all time.

I always enjoy watching Lifeforce.
I am not sure if I would put it in a list of the best or the worst, but I do consider it a must see.

I always liked Collussus: The Forbin Project myself. Kind of a chessy 70's movie, but would be interesting to see it remade.
"Lifeforce" was decent, but is mainly remembered because Mathilda May is naked through half of it...

See, this is why I wanted a list like this I've never heard of Lifeforce or Forbidden Project. Something to check out :D
I should make an adendum to include fantasy. Anyone remember Krull? I haven't seen that for ages and then one day I was channel surfing and there it was. I loved that movie as a kid.

Krull was amazing with the spinning blade thing!
Last Starfighter
Hackers
Starship Troops Rough Necks (CGI cartoon amazing)

Two movies that I enjoyed involving technology which were not exactly great, but still worth seeing:
The Lawnmower Man
Demon Seed

Fantasy movies? Legend: The Director's Cut. Not the crap that was released in the theatres. I've seen the Director's Cut on AMC 2 times, and it's almost a completely different movie.

Heh, I just ordered this along with Labyrinth and Willow (Special Edition) as a package from Amazon.
Willow has to be included too if Fantasy is part of the list.

Willow is barely tolerable. Poor Warwick Davis, who had to make us believe slight-of-hand could overcome real magic. He was a better Ewok and R2D2 than a Dwarf Mage.

Does The Abyss count? It's another one where you have to watch the director's cut, or not at all.

The abyss is a sci fi movie for sure, and its good.
A fire in the sky is good too, not sure what kind of sci fi you are looking for.

As I've said in the worst movie thread:
Blood of Heroes
Hmm off the top of my head:
Butterfly Effect: Proving that Ashton Kutcher can, in fact, actually act.
Momento, of course...not really sci fi, but close enough.
Pitch Black: Much much better than chronicles of riddick.
Sixee
01-21-2009, 07:54 AM
Pitch Black was an awesome movie, probably my 2nd favorite after Aliens. They did, indeed, ruin the character in the Chronicals of Riddick. I'm sorry to say, I actually paid money to see that travesty....
The Abyss was really good too. Lots of character development in that one, although the special effecte are a bit cheesy by today's standards.
Serenity is another good Sci-Fi movie...

Memento isn't sci-fi! Or is that a different move you are talking about (Momento?)
Anyway, no one has said Terminator / Terminator 2? I'm surprised. Independence Day as well. And of course my personal favorite: 5th Element
Fandros
01-21-2009, 01:19 PM
Anime: Vampire Hunter D
Fist of the North Star
Movie: Serenity ( from the series Firefly )
Princess Bride ( assuming you've seen it, but worth mentioning)
Will give it some thought and add to the list.

Time Bandits :) I actually like it.
Alien(s)
Total Recall
Ice Pirates
Holy crap we forgot Dune (The Original movie)
Bylimet Spiritwalker
01-21-2009, 06:19 PM
Yeah, the original Dune and Princess Bride are two I can watch any time I catch them on the tube. Think I have copies of both on video tape somewhere too, heh.
Is there anyone that has not seen Princess Bride? Seriously? Fantastic cast, and the way it was presented as a story read by the grandfather (Peter Falk as always great) added a nice touch.

Sword and the Sorceror 4tw!
I watched that movie so many times the tape broke LOL.
Alas, other than Lord of the Rings, what other decent fantasy flick has come out? (If anyone says Eragorn I'm gonna smite thee with a mighty smiting!)

Transformers: The Movie (the original, not Michael Bays' one)
Any movie that could make over 2 million people write letters via SNAIL MAIL (keep in mind, no email at this time) protesting the death of Optimus Prime, definately needs some attention.
Sixee

You are just saying that cause your avatar is Rodimus Prime....
A bit of trivia, that is Orson Wells' last performance, as Unicrom. When asked about the role, he described it as a movie about children's toys that do horrible things to one another...!
If you want to include anime, I suggest Vampire Hunter D, Princess Mononoke, Macross Plus and Ghost in the Shell.
Binuven
01-25-2009, 06:06 AM
Well, they DID do horrible things to each other. In the first 10 minutes or so we watch Megatron and the rest of the Decepticons kill 4 main characters (Prowl, Brawn, Ironhide and Ratchet, including a point blank shot to the face to Ironhide from ol Megs himself). This is before the credits even roll!!! They don't make cartoons like that anymore!

Serenity is a pretty blah movie unless you've watched the series - I think this was why it performed so poorly in theaters.
5th Element is one of my all time favorites, and a DVD that I keep handy. It's the opposite end from Aliens - bright, silly, and still has plenty of action and neat gizmos.
Maniacles
01-25-2009, 01:24 PM
No, No, No, do NOT include Anime...otherwise I have to start listing entire series....
(aw, hell)
like....
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell
Basilisk
Berserk
Samauri Champloo
Yes, Even Robotech.
But that's just the good stuff...and doesn't even include Black Lagoon, because that's just a modern pirate story. There's plenty of bad stuff I haven't mentioned.

Legend: The Director's Cut.
My movie shipment arrived the other day, and I am about to sit down with a batch of sliders and cold beer and watch this.
And please, let's not add Anime into the mix. It deserves a separate thread if we want to go there.

What's so good about the director's cut? I liked the movie the well enough the release I saw. what's missing from it?
Sixee
01-26-2009, 07:39 AM
The devil's in the details: You don't see the Demon's face untill 3/4 of the way through the movie, making his unveiling when Lilly sees him for the first time, much more dramatic; Lilly sings to the unicorn to tame it; She also sings a song to Jack, when showing him how light reflects off of her pendant, the scene between Meg Mucklebones and Jack is much longer; just a lot of little things that add up to make the movie much better in my mind.
Here's a list http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089469/alternateversions

the director's cut of legend was definately a better version, although i liked the music (tangerine dream) in the theater release version.
yes, you do need to make a separate thread for anime. it's an entirely different genre.
my favorite sci fi movies:
5th element (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119116/)(absolute favorite)
blade runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/)
2001 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/)
2010 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/) (even though they didn't entirely follow the book)
andromeda strain (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066769/)

The Chronicles of Narnia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363771/)

Spaceballs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X4X3XcLyco)
Flash Gordon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMEc_MiLmgw)
i can't list The Last Starfighter because my mother bought a copy of it and played it to death, like all day, over and over again. she's not a big sci-fi fan, actually can't stand it, but she loves this movie. at the time she was playing the fuck out of this movie, i was dumping my first ex-fiance who could have doubled for alex rogan, esp when he came back to earth and took his helmet off. god, i puke even now when i see it. so i guess i'm not a fan of this movie.
some other movies that i found to be puke-worthy or just lulzy (trailers on the links)
zombie strippers (http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1340080409/)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_BPcDOjJCc)

Agree, 5th Element was a great movie.
And you need to smoke a lot of really good shit before watching Killer Clowns From Outer Space. Then again, it still might be a waste of a good buzz.

Lots of really good movies ( and some not-so-good, guilty pleasures ) on this list. But I am shocked and saddened that we are on page 5 and no one has mentioned Wizards yet. Ok, I could see the argument it is fantasy and not sci-fi, but I think the final scene should get it at least an honorable mention in the sci-fi category.

Amazon.com
Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the "good lands," while dimwitted mutants with poor comic timing emerge from the nuclear wastes. In the ultimate confrontation between good and evil, a hippie-ish wizard named Avatar defends his utopia against the technological and neo-Nazi revival of his bad-seed twin, Blackwolf. With volleys of jokes that couldn't hit a barn door, elves with Brooklyn accents, and the dubious climax that sees the kindly old wizard using one of the hated machines of war to triumph over evil, Wizards is one of fantasy animation's least successful examples. --Alan E. Rapp
This the Wizards you meant?
I much prefer "The Dark Crystal"(fantasy), and of course "Heavy Metal"(SciFi) if we are looking at animation.

The movie is a bit campy, but how that reviewer can trash Wizards and hold the absolutely horrible animated LoTR up as a masterpiece baffles me. And the ending is great, "Mom liked me better!"
