At least, I think that's what they were called...

I was reading an article about missing lore in PC games, and I remember this spot I used to love to level up in pre-Kunark. Living gnolls and hunting dogs by day, and then they turned undead at night. All on some hill around an odd statue, but I never figured out why or if there was a story attached to it.

Anyone know?

Well the gnolls of the Karanas (later called the Thundering Steppes after the cataclysm) were from Splitpaw, the EQ1 dungeon in South Karana and in Everquest2's Splitpaw Saga you went into their den to ally with some of them, and you also learned of their cannibalistic nature, and while some were necromancers none there were ever undead.

There seemed to be a lot of unexplained undead or weird things by weird statues in EQ1. Like the Shadow Men in Lesser Faydark were never explained in EQ1 and barely explained in the most recent expansion of EQ2, or the zombies around the various pyramid structures.

Hah, I loved leveling around Splitpaw, using my Druid for heals and snares while my rogue was grinding. Was usually not too hard to get one of the spires to camp.

But yes, in East Karana there were the Undead Reavers down the hillside from the Hill Giants. The leader was part of a quest I think, either the kill or something he dropped. They had their camp close to the valley leading to Highkeep.

But speaking of the Karanas, how many remember the green mist of death and the Queen cockroach in (I think) West Karana? I think there had been some kind of GM event, and the mist and bugs were left for some time after before being removed. The mist was on some kind of timer, and you wanted to be close to a building you could jump up on and then you could watch the bugs and their swarming from the roof.

That event was supposed to be for the release of the Plane of Disease, back in the Velious era if I'm not mistaken. That got delayed, delayed, and then canceled as they planned Planes of Power.

Actually, what used to happen on the plains of Karana are now happening in the Commonlands.
