So this Sunday I decided to take the wife to watch Underworld. Yes the movie that whitewolf is sueing sony for.

The only thing I can say is I was expecting better. The vampires had no real power, embraced no one in the entire movie, and no time was spent on character development and background.

The Lichen/werewolves, were probably the best characters, mostly due to the awesome morphine CGI. The end of the movie came about and I had no clue who the fuck or why the fuck this war would be going on.

I was expecting a Romeo and Juliet forbidden love with action and an awesome background story. Instead, I ended up watching a Female vampire who's only talent was jumping from windows, and some Gothic Fabio stand behind her coat tails until she finally bites him and he becomes this Hybrid.

On a scale of 1 - 10, I give this movie a 6. The only reason is that the director did a good job with the talent and script he had to work with. Lighting, Music, and Mood were good throughout the entire movie. They did leave room for a sequel, and I can only pray that it lives up to the hype that it will get.

From what I understand, the lawsuit was thrown out.

I do wish the vampires would have been more...vampiric. Jumping about and baring fangs isn't that impressive. There's a dichotomy between the two species: Werewolves are all brawn, nearly insurmountable in hand to hand combat, while vampires are particularly adept at mental and emotional control (while still being physically impressive). But it seems that the screenwriter wanted to avoid traditional (and White Wolf-ish) stereotypes.

The direction was good, the setting and effects made decent use of the budget (which I don't think was that much), the plot was...acceptable I suppose, the glimpses into vampiric and werewolf society were too slim, and Kate needs to learn to close the door behind her.

Not as good as I hoped for, but much better than I had feared.

I thought it was a pretty dumb movie, but I also wasn't expecting much, only seeing it because there was nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon with no electricity.

The highlight of the whole movie, for me, would probably be the preview at the beginning for the new Resident Evil movie. :\

i expected crap, and i liked the movie alot

if you cant expect the movie to portray vampires the way you think they are meant to be portrayed, everyone has their own basic opinion and belief...

I liked the story, and the fact that Marcus was Awakened at the end by Lichan blood (the scientist guy got killed in that room and Marcus' eyes turned black). Should make for an interesting possible sequel

They did leave room for a sequel

Uh, they served up the sequel on a silver platter..

Tierfin, there are general powers that the modern idea of a vampire has, such as speed, strength, etc..of which almost nothing was given to the vampires aside from Viktor(who was the only decently done vamp). They were "killing" vampires by snapping their necks and trying to choke them out..

Last thing, it's "Lycans" people, short for lycanthropes. Lichens are fungus and algae living together symbiotically.

Werefungus would be an insidious threat, though.

"Quick, Selene, your silver insoles! That's not athlete's foot!"

Catching a fist and breaking a neck isn't really vampiric. Hell Rambo has been doing it for years.

I quote a line from one of my favorite novels. Vampires must be powerful, beautiful, and without regret.

While the Main chick was skilled, was she powerful?
She was pretty damn hot, I'll give her that.
Regret, as we know is what made Louie into such an interesting vampire, and really serves no purpose for this movie, but I love saying that line so blah!

They might as well of made the war between humans and werewolves. Too much lore of the vampire was missing or misrepresented. Hell they killed the boss werewolf Lucian with 'liquid' bullets.

WTF, no special event to kill a MASTER or the Oldest Lichen?

I think that is what dissapointed me most.

I found Lucien's player to be inadequate for the role; he just didn't have the look of an ancient werewolf. He acted well enough, but I kept seeing Silent Bob with eyeliner and fangs.

Hopefully the inevitable sequel gets more money and an imaginative scriptwriter so that they can do the vampires justice.

However killing werewolves barehanded without visible effort -is- showing greater strength and portraying Viktor as powerful. Specifically his attitude and mannerisms from the time she wakes him up until he leaves the house has that whole ancient vampire master feel, to me.

i thought it was special the way lucian died...

he got shot with bullets that had silver nitrate (aqueous solution) in them. It wasn't a silver bullet, it was a bullet that released silver nitrate into the dudes veins, and he still didn't die until he got shot like 4 more times =/

Viktor was a crazy Badass...and how can you say Lucian wasn't? That fool got shot in the head and neck like 4 times and he pushed the bullets out himself?

Anyone think Lucian look like a skinny Rob Zombie?

Lichen? I think you mean lycan (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?va=lycanthropy).

yes thank you for reading the post...

it was alright. If you are expecting some great work of art then this isnt the movie for you. but if u are looking for a mildly entertaining movie with some decent action sequences and pretty good special effects then its worth spending the 5.50 on the matinee if u have nothing better to do during some day.

no. i dont think it there will be a sequel. they just used the tool of leaving the end of the movie very loose so that you will be walking out of the movie, kind of thinking about what would happen next

I gave it a ten.. probably one of the best mass-market films made for under 30 million in recent memory. I though, with the exception of Kraven the bitch, the character casting was perfect, and I also thought Selene was perfect (and I'm not talking about sex-appeal, just everything about her was perfectly cast).

Yeah...

I bet you liked Titanic too...

Vampires sucked ass. You could have called them humans lycan hunters and it would have been the exact same aside from viktor.

Kinu, I don' get it..

and no, i didn't particularly like titanic, not enough blood, guts, and action for me :/

I think what Kinuvan meant was that the Vampires (other than Viktor) were so non-Vampire-like, their characters may as well have been humans, and just referred to as 'lycan hunters.'

Or at least that's how I took it.

I enjoyed it. I do, however, agree that the vampires should have had some more talents. Definately came off a bit human.

I know, I'm bumping an old thread.

I saw this movie finally last night, and I have to agree with most of the folks here.

The Vampires were weak. Had I been Viktor and woke up to seeing how that cry baby Kraven was running things, I would have wiped out the Coven myself, just on general principals.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the studio gives them a larger budget for the next one and we see some real vamping.
